You can take the test if you are native English and want to gain extra points towards your visa.
The information on the IELTS website is hard to work your way through, most of the information given is about the Academic test and not the General Training test that you need to do for immigration purposes.
I wrote a guide to the IELTS test here a week or so ago, listening and spoken are a breeze, reading isn't too difficult, and provided you don't mind writing then the written section aint so hard

hi thanks for your replies, however i did go on the IELTS site and felt pig sick I have 115 points, but i do have a job offer which takes me to 120 but my job offer only lasts until oct 09 which isnt a problem if they will have given us a visa by this time.
Im quite mad as take for example if you have a uk passport you can get 15 points now my son could get 15 points but he is quite dyslexic whereas ive got a uk passport and a first class degree but i only still get 15 points. When i read through the examples i was horrified as i know i wouldnt score very high which is quite sad as i have a degree but i worked very hard to get that and didnt have to do assignments with only 1 minute to prepare. I just hope they will accept my job offer.

The IELTS site is no use whatsoever to prepare you for the general, test, from your comments I can guarantee you that you were looking at the information for the Academic test, there is more useful info on this site to prepare you for the IELTS general training test than there is on the IELTS site.
oh and BTW, I'm dyslexic too, if your a native English speaker then the IELTS test is a joke, the only tricky bits are the reading and writing, but if you can listen and string 400 words together then its not a problem... seriously ITS NOT A PROBLEM, I can write in a ledgible manner and my punctuation is somewhat....er....random.

Yes the Examples on the IELTS website are awful, and like you I got very stressed about it. don't get stressed, just read the guidelines and tips on this website, book your test and don't even bother revising.
Oh and when you go to the IELTS tests take with you a 10 pack of sharpened pencils with erasers, makes life easier when you pencil breaks or rolls onto the floor!
