What would you do?

Now we're back from our reccie of Brisbane and Perth we are having problems deciding what to do. OH has applied for a job in Joondalup and had an interview while we were there. If he gets it he will go and we will stay and tidy up. However, I can't support us on my wage, so what is the best way to manage sending funds overseas without a horrendous fee every time?

Second possibility is that he doesn't get the job and we start again. He suggested that perhaps I should go first and get a job while he stays and supports the family for a month before either quitting or coming to join me. Now I know that some of you have come over separately. Can anyone advise? How do you manage?

Hi Kiwi,

Sorry I can't actually help but I wanted to bump your thread up because I'm a fellow Kiwi, been living in the UK for 12 years, hoping to go to Brissie at end of year. I'm someone will be along soon to answer your question

I use Hifx to send cash to Oz, no fees and excellent exchange rates. They also have an office in Sydney to send cash the other way.

Thanks for that. I will see if I can find info about that on the net. We might throw caution to the winds and all go together yet, but that would be a logistical nightmare and an expensive mistake if jobs aren't forthcoming.

Hey, we use an NZ company to transfer funds around the place - Custom House. They seem to be pretty good.

Best of luck with the move

Hi Kiwi,

When we ping-ponged back to Perth I came 6 weeks ahead of my husband as I had a job offer and they would not wait. It was very very hard but worked out well as I started laying foundations down, got a rental within a week and got money coming in ! Hubbie stayed with rellies, packed up the house and got the dog ready. I think he had the harder deal as I was where we wanted to be !

Is there a bank that is in Aus and NZ that your hubby and you could both draw funds from.

Keep smiling-we look back on those times as hard, but worth it !

Good luck !

Thanks for those ideas.

Although our bank is in Aus too, they said that the two are quite separate and there is no way to do that. I haven't asked around much yet though. Yes, I think that Dave's idea of me coming over first is that I couldn't blame him for choosing the wrong place to live. Lol. However, I was hoping to look for full time work in OZ after the kids are settle in school in the New Year. Whatever we do there'll be some time of separation, so we'll have to have a plan.

Things have changed a bit since I wrote that post though. Dave has been told by an aussie friend that he should be able to get his blue card as a builder, because he's been working as one here for more than three years, providing he gets good references. If that's true it opens a few more doors, and he's feeling happier. Also if he doesn't get the job in Perth we have decided to narrow our choice to Queensland, which makes it easier to shoot across and help with the decision making, not to mention conjugal visits.
