Just a basis question !

Ok, we are about to start the complicated process of applying to Oz.
  • Am I right in thinking the first thing to do is to complete a medical then we can apply for a visa?
  • Is there any particular agents I should go for or avoid?
  • Will I need a vast amount of cash/savings to complete the whole process?
  • Will I need to show evidence of actually being offered a job before starting the visa thing?
  • I am a single dad with a teenage son, will this be looked upon as unfavourable in our application?
Sorry that these may look like silly questions but I have spent hours in researching all of the above and seem to have got myself all confused. I've more silly questions but thought these will do for now. Any help/support is much appreciated.

Thank you, Mark & Adam

Hi Mark & Adam

The first thing you should do is your skills assessment.

The last thing you do is your police checks and medicals. Your medicals are only valid for 12 months so you have to enter Oz within 12 months of the medicals. Usually a case officer will advise you to do them near the end of the process.

You don't need a job offer to get a visa.

If you use an agent they are usually around £1500. We have budgeted about £5k for the skills assessment, meds, polcie checks, agent fees etc. Add your flights on top.

We are using Thinking Australia and they have been great. Go Matilda have a good reputation on here too. If you search on here you can see some comments people have made about various agents.

What job do you do?

Hope this helps a bit and good luck.

Karen

karen has given you some good advice,we used an agent to help us as like you i was soo confused as to what to do and what to write ,lol, the visa process can be soo stresful and the waiting can blow your mind but its worth it in the end .
If you think you will be able to complete all the paperwork alone which many folks on here have done,it can save you a few quid in agent fees,
good luck with everything

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Karen, I think I was getting lost. I work as a social worker in a child protection team and my son has just completed his GCSE's so is now looking in further education. I have completed a skilled assessment online and got good feedback so am I right in thinking my next step will be to find an agent? How close are you from completing the whole process? Has it been a nightmare? How many of you? - Oh no, there I go again with the questions, sorry !

Hi

We have just submitted out application. My OH works in IT. It has taken us ages really to get to this point, because we were 5 points short. To get the 5 points I took an AQF Diploma (Australian Qualification Framework) as I had relevant work experience but no formal qualifications. By doing this course, I got the 5 points we were short.

If it wasn't for having a good agent, we would still be crying over the immi website i think!!! LOL!!!!

It sure is a minefield!! Not sure how old your son is - 16 or 17 maybe? You should speak to an agent becuase there is some kind of issue about proving he is dependant on you to get him on your visa. I don't know much about this issue as it doesn't affect me - so I would get some professional advice about that if I were you.

Karen
