international driving permit

Can anyone help us please, we are heading for Perth in August and have seen threads relating to international driving licences is this the same as an international driving permit. If so how long does it last until you need an australian one and are they hard to apply for? Jan

I dont think you need to worry about an international driving licence or permit. If you are coming to Aus on a permanent resident visa you will be able to drive on your UK licence for 3 months, after which you will need to get an Aussie one which is very easy and straightforward. If you are coming on a holiday or temporary visa, I believe you can just stick with your UK licence although am sure someone will correct me on this bit if I am wrong.

You just have to remember when driving, to have with you at all times your driving licence or passport as they will nick you if you dont!!

Lyn

Changing your licence over here is so simple, you have 3 months to do it so don't have to rush. You'll have an eye test and your photo taken and pay some cash - and then you get your licence in the post. You can renew for a year or 3 years.
