Hi Mandy
If it were me, I would take every single piece of camping equipment that you have. It is a big thing out in Oz.
I've only ever been camping twice in my life and the first time was in Oz, 20 years ago. My sister, Australian bro-in-law and I went on a tour of WA for 10 days. The tents were, frankly, horrible - those little two man things that you have to crawl into. Everything else was bedrock basic as well, including one of those 2" high Camping Gaz things on the ground and Elane & I crouched over the pots like a couple of true natives!
But hey, we were all very young and it was camping on a budget etc! I can honestly say there were no creepy crawlies in any of the campsites we stopped at. The sites were FAR more basic then than they are now as well - I think they did have mains loos and cold showers but that was about it.
I found that the worst bit was that a lilo is only comfortable in a swimming pool and it was sweaty inside the tents because they only had one flap so you couldn't get air flowing through the thing and these days I'd definitely buy a cheap duvet instead of a sleeping bag because they are sweaty as well (years of using those on yachts!) Plus I'm not into grovelling on the ground in order to cook something!
I reckon that even I would like camping in a big tent with proper equipment plus tables and chairs. MY sister's sons are now 11 & 14 and they love camping. Elaine told me about a trip they had made to a place called Guilderton, about 100kms north of Perth. The link is here and it actually looks lovely. She said the pitches there are about $25 a night, which is peanuts for 4 people. One of the links is here and I swear the thing in the middle photo is a tent! It is at the mouth of the Moore River, where it meets the Indian Ocean. Apparently the river offers very safe swimming and there are laods of other activities.

There are loads of sites like it now, all over Australia. The idea of camping has come on in leaps & bounds in Oz since I did it! Plus you can
trust the weather in Australia!
Best wishes
