We told our kids (age 8 and 13) about 18 months ago. We made them think it was a family decision and they agreed to it (even though we would still be doing it if they didn't agree). Since then we have visited Oz and they have been really excited. They have started watching all the tv programmes to do with Oz and they go on youtube looking for anything 'Australia'. I would tell them as soon as possible.
We told our boys straight away, as soon as we started planning it, but in hindsight I wished we had waited. It's been such a rollercoaster - we are still not even sure that it's 100% possible that we can go, so our children have been just as confused/excited/downhearted as we are. When I told my 10 year old that someone on this forum hadn't told their kids yet that they were emigrating in the summer he thought that was brilliant! He actually said it was a cool suprise and he wished we hadn't told him. Very annoying, but I can see his point. Good luck with telling them - I am sure they will be 100% excited - what an amazing opportunity and adventure!
I think it depends on the age of the children - it took my daughter who was 11 at the time quite a while to get her head around the idea - she would have been devestated had we told her only 12 weeks before we left (her initial reaction when we said we were thinking of going was that she burst into tears and asked how she could possibly leave her whole life behind). 12 months later, (after lots of discussions), she had warmed to the idea, had a pen pal at the school she was going to and looking forward to her leaving party. I think it has to be down to knowing your own children and how they may react to the situation. I had to remember that we couldn't treat it like we were taking them on holdiay but changing their lives forever.
How would you like to live in aus

Thanks for this. We told them yesterday and our 8 year old son was ecstatic and our 6 year old daughter appeared happy but couldn't comprehend it being more than just a holiday. Lots of questions today - so so far so good!
Good luck with things your end.
