HELP! Have finally decided today that we're going to take the plunge. We (myself, husband, 2 kids and 2 dogs + other family members!) were looking at New Zealand to start, however, my parents are pretty much at retirement age and I'd have to wait 3 years before they could come out (so I've been advised!) Anyhow. I'm now looking to Australia, but have no idea where to start. We kinda liked New Zealand as it apparently still has 'seasons' which my husband likes, he's into game shooting and fishing. Can anyone please help on advising which areas may be suitable. I like the sea, he likes the rural! I know this is a big ask and everyone will have their own opinion of areas but any advice would be much appreciated. He's been running a building firm for a god few yeasr now but is an Electrician by trade, can anyone foresee any problems with points? Sorry, I know I've gone on a bit, but starting to get excitied now.
Hi,
Just wanted to welcome you to the PIO site, a wonderful place to start your journey to Oz!
First thing I would recommend you do is chat to a few agents to make sure you will be eligible to emigrate and meet the strict criteria required, most of them offer a free 10-15 chat over the phone; there are several recommended ones on here, Go Matilda, Visa Bureau, Ian Harrop to name a few.
As regards the seasons in Oz, Im no expert but I believe that areas further south, such as Adelaide are more temperate climates than other parts of Oz, where it can get particularly hot and/or humid. Again, there will be plenty of people on here to give advice on the extremes of climes that Oz can offer!
Anyway, welcome to the wacky world of us and hope you enjoy the ride!!

If you want seasons I'd head south. Have you considered Tasmania? The scenery is stunning (not quite New Zealand standard) but it does have a rural, small town feel and certainly has more defined seasons than Queensland.
Alternatively for better job prospects maybe Melbourne and the surrounding area's - you can get four season's in one day there!!
Head south if you want a temperate climate e.g., Melbourne, Adelaide. They experience four seasons like us, but much warmer, probably similar to Spain, southern France, etc. The climate here is probably not too different from the northernmost parts of NZ.
Hope this helps and good luck with your migration plans.
Cheers,
Tom

Dream the life, live the dream.
We are in Tasmania and it has seasons . We clay shoot not game although we could if we wanted to. the gun clubs over here are very welcoming and easy to fit in. We brought our guns with us and it wasnt too much hassle in fact it was easier than the motorbikes!! Fishing is good both game and sea. Super trout rivers and easy to get fishing on them. Things are quite laid back over here and we have had very few problems . We came over 18 months ago on a 163 business visa and have never regreted it.Tasmania is the most affordable state in regard to housing and there are some stunning properties with land which are reasonable in price although I must say in the last 2 years they are going up in price. Schools are good and there is a very low crime rate. Although we are an island and many say very like New Zealand in some ways. we have many of the mainland shops and more are coming It does get chilly in the Winter but at least it is not too hot in the Summer and it isnt a case of where is the next air con? We dont get that much rain and at the moment we would welcome some.
Tasmania is a beautiful place , people are friendly . there is a shortage of skilled trades people . Check out the web site T-change - for your sea change or tree change to Tasmania and also contact Joanna Jacobs she is the relocation officer for the Tasmanian goverment good luck and if I can be on any help then just let me know

Hi there, thanks so much, that'll be great. I'm just in process of booking 10 days to tour Melbourne to Adelaide to get a feel for both areas. Hard to know where to start, they all look and sound great but when it comes to living there you need to know more than that! Look forward to hearing from you. Good luck with your plans.

Hi there
Welcome to POI hope you will enjoy it as much as me!!!! I haven't been to NZ but I have lived in Oz and visited there twice last year. If you like seasons then chose Melbourne.
You really need to go for a visit yourselves to make a good decision for you as everyone has different tastes. We are going to Melbourne but to be honest we prefer Queensland although it is quite hot most of the time so wouldn't suit your hubbie.
I hope you can manage to make up your minds and good luck !
Les

We have relatives all over beautiful Tasmania and spent over a month touring there. I can’t tell you how beautiful the Cradle Mountain National Park is…and the wildlife! We were filling up at a service station and a guy pulled up next to us in a ute…there was a wombat on his passenger seat with it’s front paws on the dashboard: Turns out it had been hit by a car...he’d nursed it back to health but it had not wanted to return to the wild…just like being around humans!
How extraordinary is The Bay of Fires and how exquisite is the Tasman Peninsula. Port Arthur…such tranquil beauty and stillness with a history of such misery and pain. How truly stunning the Tamar Valley is (and we live in our UK version!). Launceston still has a fountain originally meant for Launceston, Cornwall; in a fabulous civic park. Hobart is bustling with historic buildings, a fabulous waterfront…enjoy an outdoor breakfast at Salamanca Place.
Tassie brews the best beer in OZ…the water is so good; Boags in the north and rivals Cascade in the south. Who cares about the Cadburys Tour we did the brewery one instead…the staff were so friendly and laid back…they didn’t mind our boys sharing their sunnies with the famous tigers. Please see gallery! Wine Glass Bay on the east coast and fairy penguins at the bottom of the garden in Bicheno! And so much more…..It is truly a clean, green and very pleasant land.
Melbourne and Adelaide do have seasons, although Melbourne is fondly teased for its changeable weather. If you are considering State sponsorship schemes look at South Australia and the ACT. We loved Adelaide, more affordable, good schools, lovely beaches, GREAT wine!
Canberra often gets a bad press, but has much to recommend it…search for some of the positive threads about the ACT on this forum and on :http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=54 Canberra certainly has the seasons and is only a little over 3 hours drive south of sunny Sydney. The beaches to the south east of the ACT are really gorgeous and the city itself has great lakes for water sports enthusiasts and guess what NO SHARKS!
Absolutely - come to Canberra! We have the best of both worlds - very clearly defined seasons (lots of beautiful autumn leaves at the moment). We are 90 minutes from some stunning beaches, 2 hours from Australia's best snowfields, 3 hours from Sydney and, if you are really desperate 7 hours from Melbourne. They are saying we are going to have a construction boom - the govt has released a whole lot of land for new homes to accommodate people they are hoping to bring in. We have good facilities on the whole and they dont call it the bush capital for nothing - you can see the bush from anywhere in town and can be walking in the bush with only a short drive. We have wineries within cooee, decent restaurants and a nice line in alfresco cafes. Unemployment is at an all time low and whilst I have no idea about the trades (you cannot get an electrician here if you want domestic work done, so they must be busy!) you cant walk through the shopping centres without seeing loads of adverts in the windows for retail staff.

Hi Jo, My mother in law is moving to oz, so we have been on this site a while, Correct me if im wrong, You may remember me, you bought our house number 31, If so, how mad is that, can't believe your coming to oz, We live in Melbourne mount martha, its a great area you will love it here, if you need any info on the area write back, all the best with the move.
I would recomend country victoia if you can get work. 4 distinct seasons which are guaranteed. But not 4 in one day like melbourne lolBright in the high country is beautiful i would recomend it for a holiday if you are based in melbourne, not too far away.
