hi can anyone help, do we buy everything new out in oz or ship things like tumble dryers, washing machines, bikes etc? we have snowboards and boots too and want to holiday in new zealand. we should be going in summer (UK) but will i need winter leather boots and warm coats?
Hi Yvette, This is the eternal question! One of which i am always a little confused over, some say Aus is dearer to buy and then other stuff is cheaper. I supose it does depend on how new your stuff is aswell. I think we will take almost everything we will just have a good clear out of the rubbish and stuff that won't be needed etc. Going to be a big job that!! Also depends on your finances if you can afford to buy everything new thats great and will be lovely spending time in all those shops and choosing all your new furniture etc, but if not take everything that has a few years life left in it. The shipping cost has got to be cheaper than replacing everything hasn't it? Going in Nov to validate so are going to look around all the shops and have a price up, see what's what! Best of luck with your decision. Alison x

Hiya we fetched no furniture just 18 big boxes of personal stuff ,kitchen utensils and tools.I thought furniture was reasonably priced here and our stuff in the uk was past its best anyway. If its good condition or sentimental id possibly bring it over.We sold all our wetsuits and jetski gear because(according to hubby)it would be too warm her for them!!bo**ocks ,,it can get well chilly in the sea ,i would imagine snow is similar.Have a look at supera-mart on line(soz dont no the addy) or Welcome to Fantastic Furniture as these will give you an idea of cost when buying new,,

We brought everything and glad we did, would have been difficult to replace the furniture with similar quality for the price of the container. We did have quite a few purchases to make here and have spent a few thousand $ in the process - having our stuff meant we didn't have to do any impulse buying and have been able to shop around or wait to find what we wanted. It's taken us several months to find stuff we like for one of our rooms and it's coming over from Melbourne
I'm taking a big case and my tool kit.
Fresh start - that's what I'm going for.
We've been holding back buying new furniture and making do anyway - no point taking old stuff over.
There's IKEA's all over Oz and they are pretty much a one stop shop for getting the essentials. OK there's some crap but generally the stuff isn't that bad.
i am not using an agent either, we have gone all through the process without one and have had meds finalised 4th mar 08 now we are just waiting for final decision.
i think you are right about a fresh start, all our furniture is crap anyway cus we have never bought good stuff knowing we wanted to go to oz. ikea is pretty good anyway, even if youjust get a hotdog!!

Simple rule in my opinion. Sell off the big heavy stuff, keep the sentimental, valuable and more personal smaller items.
Australia is not as cheap as some think, but still pretty good for things like TV's, furniture and white goods.
I would get a quote and go from there. Once you see how much more expensive it is to ship those larger heavier items you will probably get rid of a load of items anyhow.
