Grrr I really want to say bad words when people knock Canberra.
It is as good a place as any in Aus to be - a really nice blend of urban and rural. It is clean, spacious, nice weather - 4 seasons a year, it has super views from almost anywhere and is built so there is a lot of green space and you are not shut in by buildings. We dont get the wind whipping up straight from the South Pole and generally our drivers dont wear their hats when they drive!
There is heaps to do - we have some very nice alfresco dining opportunities, there are regular major events - the biggest folk festival in the country is here next weekend. We have a thriving, if not international, theatre scene, music is more common than not - not always the super big names but you can grit your teeth and head off to Sydney if you are that desperate to see the Rolling Stones! Yesterday we had a super fireworks display (not quite sure why but spectacular if you like fireworks.) There are more Olympic sized pools in the local area than the whole of UK (inless you have built quite a few over the last couple of years). We have a Chinatown without having lots of ethnic ghettos.
Our schools are as good as anywhere else and the ACT prides itself on its educational standards. We have some excellent beaches a couple of hours away and also some top level snow fields same distance in a different direction. Our medical services are on a par with anywhere else in Aus - apart from one or two specialities in which case you go to Sydney.
Sure it has that feel of a country town but that is not all bad - we dont have the gangs roaming the streets, we dont have huge tracts of pylons and smokestacks (cf the ride from Melbourne airport into the city!!!), we have nice people
Why people would actually want to live in Melbourne is beyond me!
