Worried operation will effect my medical

Our medicals are looming and I'm due to go into hospital to have an operation on my ankle. Basically I have a bone deformity and I will have my ankle joints fused together. This will sort my ankle out and I will be pain free which in a funny way am looking forward to. I will be in a cast for 3 months and even though the operation if succesful and it does have a good success rate will fix the problem. I'm just really worried that it will affect my medical when I have it done.

Hi Eugene, good to hear from you and that your op was a success. I feel confident all will be good in the end and I'm looking forward to being pain free. Just a little nervous about recovery......it'll be hard with 3 kids. Hubby will work from home so will be a great help. I can't see it affecting the medicals but there is always that worry at the back of your mind. What stage you at with oz?

hi we have just past the tra (dental technician) now waiting for meds or visa. what might happen after your plaster is taken off they will customise your shoe they call it a rocker.what this does it simulates the ankle movement in a walking motion & after a short while you will not notice it.

Im sure that you will be fine. Keep a copy of Drs letters etc and then if they ask for anything like that at the medical you will already have it

Spoke to specialist today and he said he is more than happy to write a ltter to take to medicals explaining all and at teh end of it should be fixed. Specialist is also an Aussie fan and worked out there himself, so even better
Also found out that will be wearing an aircast, looks like a ski boot which helps recovery better and also has the rocker that you said about in the actual boot.
Thanks for all the info

Hi
Don't think you have anything to worry about our son had knee op 2 weeks before meds
we mentioned it on forms & asked doctor if would be a problem & was told they are only concerned if you will place a strain on oz health system

I don't think it affects the medical as such but it may delay the results a bit - although that may depend on who you see as Lee & Tab seem to have had a nicer doctor than us!

I am having a similar problem with my daughter who had her medical on 26 Feb one week before having a big knee op. I took copies of all the gp and hospital letters and the medical doctor didn't seem too worried about the op but has asked for a letter from the consultant stating that the op was successful before he will send off the medical results nd although the consultant's secretary said that would be ok, it can't be done until mid April when my daughter goes back for a 6 week check.

I have now had to email my case officer asking for an extension of the deadline she gave me to supply all the paperwork as that runs out on 1 April. I only hope she will otherwise I am going to have a major panic!

I am having one of those spells of feeling as if this is never going to happen - we have had the house on the market since September and still no offers despite majorly dropping the price. Now with this medical thing - Aaagh!

Gosh what a nightmare!!!!
I totally understand that panic feeling, i have been feeling the same way that we will never get there. Seem to be waiting forever for a case office. We applied for a 175 skilled visa via paper and now wish we had done it online, it all seems to be done so much quicker online. Got confirmation and payment went through on the 8/10/07 and have heard nothing since so worrying if there is a problem with the visa aswell.
We sold our house last christmas and brought a smaller place with mind to renting out when we go to OZ but have now decided we don't want to do that and now will have the deal of selling our house and what with the worry of the opeation having an affect on the medicals
Anyway how is your daughters recovery?
Fingers crossed for you that all is okey with the medical situation
We thought we would wait until a case officer has told us to do our medicals but wondering now if should get them done before op I'm sure they will still have to now about op,

Thanks, she is getting a lot stronger now but we have definitely had a tough couple of weeks. She is 17 and understandably feels she's lost her dignity as I've had to help her wash, dress etc! She is hoping to get back to school next week which hopefully will help as she is missing her friends and has felt quite low.

As for when is the best time for you get your medicals done - I really don't know. I thought if we got them done before the op it would make things easier but that doesn't seem to have worked. If I could do it differently I would have delayed getting the medicals done until after the op and after the 6 weeks recovery - in the hope that I could have then gone to the medical with the letter from the hospital saying all is fine and she won't be a burden on the Oz health system. In any event, the process really was taken out of our hands - in the first email from the case officer she said we had 28 days to get the medicals done so I had a mad few days getting x-rays and medicals booked, so really didn't have much choice.

Don't forget that the medicals only last 12 months so I wouldn't get them done too early just in case (fingers crossed this doesn't happen) you don't hear for a while from the case officer.

I'm sure you will hear soon - easier said than done but try not to worry. You certainly have enough to think about at the moment with your op on the horizon. I really hope it goes well - keep us in touch with how things go. Take care.
