Anyone on a student visa?

ok, well we've been told a skilled visa is very unlikely for us as what we do is not on their skilled list.

However we have been told we can apply for a student visa where one of us can study in a skilled subject and the other party can still work..(once the course has been applied for)

just wondered if there is anyone going thru (or has done) of getting a student visa and any advice you have.

We really want to come over there as believe it will better ours and our childrens lives (my 10yr old son afraid to leave the house cos of wats in the news!)

Hi amanda

It's a tough one isnt it...we also have a 3yr old son who is none the wiser at the moment.

We've been advised to take a course that will almost guarantee us permanant residency when the course is complete so was advised to do a course in one of the required skills.

i'm looking at becoming a nurse or hairdresser
hubby anything gas/electric or plumbing

those seem to be the firm favourites that there asking for.

on the other side its about the money to live too...

Hi,

I met a couple last week where the wife is on a student visa. (hairdressing), she said it's quite difficult as both she and her husband are only allowed to work about 20 hours a week each which makes it difficult financially. Additionally, because she's on a student visa - they have to pay school fees for their daughter.

If you're on a skilled independent visa - 175 (used to be 136), your classed as a permanent resident and therefore don't have to pay fees. I think the temp visa and school fees varies from state to state (I don't think you pay it in WA) you just pay the normal school contributions that eveyone does.

I may be wrong about the student visa (I often am lol), but that's my understanding of it talking to Kate (whose hairdressing).

Hey there we are going down that route its expensive and you do have to pay school fees

Here is a copy of the email I recieved today....

You can come to Australia and study bricklaying, there are 3 choices of Colleges to choose from, they all offer the same course.

Melbourne $19,600.00 - 2 intakes per year Jan & July

Sunshine Coast$22,500.00 - 2 intakes per year Jan & July

Perth - $28,950.00 - 4 intakes per year starting Jan

The College in Perth is private unlike the other 2 which are government TAFE's, included in the price fee for Perth is $1000.00 worth of tools, the Perth College also has links to the building industry and will help you find paid work placements, the government TAFE's are not as helpful concerning paid work placements.

School fees for the children are

Melbourne - $6000.00 - Yr1 - Yr6
$7950.00 - Yr7 - Yr10
$8900.00 - Yr 11 & 12

Sunshine Coast - $8000.00 - Yr1 - Yr10
$8800.00 - Yr 11 & 12

Perth - $5000.00 Yr1 - Yr7
$5800.00 Yr8 - Yr8 - 12

The School year is calendar here in Austrlia and runs from the end of January to mid December.

Hope this helps..we are hopefully going in Jul09 we will only have to pay 6mths school fees however they do want the next year paid up in advance... I think WA is different but I dont think they do a course out there for us will have to check that out

Good Luck

Debzs
