Immunization

Hi everyone, now that the meds are over, the sticker has fallen off the phone and the plasters came off in the bath. I was wondering when do we think about immunizations, and what do we have to have (going to WA). Also what about the cost? Any ideas XX Karen K

Hi Karen

We were told that you dont need them unless you have visited a country that has yellow fever or have a stop over in some where that has it (like Singapore) - our doctor would have charged us £180 each (we are a family of 6 so double ouch!)

Take care

Rachel

Hi Karen
No you don't need any vaccinations for WA. and Rachel, we had yellow fever jabs 15 years ago for our honeymoon in Kenya and they only cost a tenner, so now I feel really old!

yellow fever is now £40 a shot!! As australia is a british colony you only need to have what you would have in the UK. advisable to have hep a though and that is free at your surgery. as most flights are a fuel stopover dont need any others as you won't be staying long (unless you have overnight stay that is)

Thanks for that, as a family of five it would be nice not to have to pay any more money out especially at the moment. As a nurse i have been given the vac for hep, however may just get this checked out with occupational health. The kids will be please especially as my eldest fainted when he had his bloods taken, bless him. xx

just a note, if you want kids to be vaccinated against hep b and don't want to pay for it then make sure you speak to your nurse about the combined vaccine twinrix - a hep a and hep b vaccine - as it has hep a component the government pay so there is no charge. I am a practice nurse and would make sure my kids are vaccinated with all the necessary before we go out. you are also then covered for hep d with this vaccine.

I'm having a nightmare trying to update my kids immunisations on the Australian Immunisation Register. After the initial dramas of getting their UK status logged, the kids injections they had here in december are still not showing up, and this affects your childcare benefit for kindy. The doctors said they sent the info, the AIR say they haven't, the doctors say they've re-sent it, but it still hasn't arrived again after over two weeks

Moral of the story being, if you can get your kids up to date by Australian standards before you come, do!

Thanks everyone for your infor. Ashmalog thanks for the infor on the Hep, sounds like a good idea, i am back in work Monday so will chat with our practice nurse and sort the kids out. My daughter is 13 in November ( hope to be in OZ by then) so i may see if she can have her chicken pox injection early. Not sure about the HPV as its a new thing i need to find out more facts about it first. XX

the uk shedule doesn't include hep b or chickenpox but the HPV is a new one which the government are rolling out in september 08 for all 12-13yr old girls initially. it is available on a prescription at the moment but you need to see GP to see if they will issue it. if not available on script then course costs £240.
