Question Cats in Oz

Hi, we are new to this site as we are in the first stages of talking about moving to Oz and where would be the best place for us to live.

My main concern is actually our two cats, who we will be bringing with us. Darren wants to move to Queensland (I've heard there are lots of poisionus snakes and spiders there) and I have been looking more at Melbourne and the surrounding area.

Can anyone tell me where would be the place with the least number of poisonus snakes and spiders and if any would cause a problem for the cats. I worry about them coz they chase and catch spiders in the UK. Or am I just worrying about nothing?

Hi,

Try not to worry to much, after visiting all the major cities within Australia we opted for Brisbane. Our cats (3) are going on Tuesday and we follow on the Wednesday, not to concerned about how they will be when we arrive, more the flight etc.

After much reflection we couldnt leave the cats here as we have had them all for nearly 10 years (family think we are daft given the cost), what ever choice you make will be fine.

Good luck....

Hi Fiona & Darren
We have cats here in oz - in fact mum cat had kittens 3 months ago, mum cat has had no problems so far and i have heard that for some reason cats are normally immune from snake & spider bites or the majority of them, but not sure how true this is - there are quite a few web sites with info on snakes & cats & dogs which may be of help to you.
I think the main thing to do is not to have heaps of leaves & garden waste around as this is often where snakes tend to go.
cheers gizmo

Don't know if anyone can advise me on my cat too?

We have a ragdoll cat - Ralph, just coming up for 2, and he is a great big ball of fur!!! He is very long haired and I know that I couldn't live without him, but the hubby is a bit concerned that he may get too hot. I'm thinking that he could always lay on the tiles in the kitchen, or find a cool shady spot in the garden. I know that fluffy cats do exist in Perth, so it must be okay surely???

Perhaps I should take the cat and leave the hubby behind!!!!
