Simon (P&D husband) says that he used a wire brush on a drill to clean his tools, he then wrapped them in a bag and put them in his suitcase, simple as that he said. Brushes were cleaned with turps, rinsed with washing up liquid and warm water to stop the bristles going hard, left to dry and then wrapped in cellophane and then put in his suitcase. His other tools and ladders etc, he pressure washed and then splashed the jeyes fluid around. Everything looked really clean and thats the main thing. If they spot anything you have been a bit lazy about, then guaranteed they will check your container more thoroughly. Our MAF inspector had a quick look and left after about 15 minutes, all signed off.
His only other tip is to make sure you declare your tools when completing your declaration forms in the air before you land, because they do spot wood/timber in your suitcases and check, and my husband says he doesn't want to see you featured on 'Border Patrol'. (An Australian/NZ TV programme shown over here about the types of fruit/vedge/meat products/timber and drugs etc that people try to bring through customs every day)
Hi - I think that shoe polish is a bit like candles you cant take them because they melt in the crate - which I suppose with hindsight is comon sense as you are putting them in a big sealed steal box on the deck of a ship crossing the equator!! I would have packed them!
I got a quote for shipping from Anglo Pacific & with it they sent a information pack with a list of everything you can & cant take it was worth getting the quote just for the information Pack!!!
I think as long as it isnt food or contains seeds (even gold sprayed pine cone decorations) & is spotlessly clean & wont melt or is not illregal you can take it. I read somewhere if you clean things like garden tools & then paint the steal bits they are passed & things like bikes & outdoor toys have to be very very clean.
We got info about shipping our car & you have to have an extreme clean as they check the air vents & interior for grass seeds & such like! I am not sure but it may be possible to put the car in the crate I know friends who have moved to India & Trinadad who have done that?
Happy Packing!!!!
Rachel

175 Paper Visa - 11th October07 * PCC April/ Meds May
************VISA GRANTED 8th July 08**********
Shoe polish and candles - we took them with us in our container and had no trouble at all.
The shoe polishes and brushes were in a plastic box container that we keep them in anyway and they were just packed up by the removals. Candles were wrapped and put in the removals boxes.
Nothing was melted! Everything of ours arrived in one piece (we were really pleased with White & Co) apart from a leather coat which had gone mouldy and musty and were not too sure what caused this, as our other leather items were fine.
We sent our car over too and gave it a thourough clean inside and out and this was passed ok. (Although I wouldnt recommend that anyone sends a car over, it can be a very costly excersise)
Thanks for the question Tracy & the replys cos I just assumed it would be a big no no & that everything like that would have to go in the crate. OH is a chippy.
Mind you I dont know if I can give up any of our weight allowance for tools when travelling with four kids - I think two of them will be too young for any allowance! But I have been told if you tell the airline you are immigrating the sometimes increase your weight allowance! & we might need a big hammer so Jake can deal with any big spiders!!!
Take care
Rachel
Hi Rachael, as your visa application was submitted around the same time as mine, I was just wondering how far are they with your application?
I got an email about two weeks back saying I have a case officer but never left any contact details.
Thanx

Hi Rachael:
It's not so much the cleaning, etc., etc., etc., with vehicles (Big Pain enuf!) but it's all the tariffs, taxes & import duties they levy, which could be the true determining factors of whether to bring your dearly belov’d car/bike to Oz... When we saw the price of used cars in Ullverston, we nearly had a fit; in UK, many of them would have been on the scrap heap years ago, but there they were still hoping to get thousands of $$$ for them! Audacious or what??!
Also of course, consider that the emissions/ratings might not meet the state's requirements so adjustments could be costly.... We'd love to bring ours, it would be worth the shipping costs, but pragmatically - weighing up all those other charges, & the Hassle Factor, plus the fact that our car is uncommon in Tassie, - cost of servicing, parts... we're just going to have to bite the bullet & factor in buying a nearly-new locally...
But is there an easy (pain-free non-eBay) way of selling/bartering your stuff - 2 days for movers to pack, a day in a b&b to make good our cottage - cleaning, touch-up paint, etc.; but what do we do with the stuff we can't ship - especially if we've sold the car!!!??? (as we are 500 miles away from family, etc., as it is – so can’t palm it off on them!!??) I’m cheap so can’t just chuck out perfectly good stuff… Charity shops?? Be nice to get something, as Every Little Helps…???
Logistics of moving to Oz.... Much to be said for just showing up at the airport with your Worldlies in your suitcases!
Cheers, Herbster - chewing his pencil & pulling his fur out XxX
PS: Anglo made an appointment with us & then failed to materialize.... Least you got the Guide out of them, we're deciding between Bonners & Excess International...
