Talking Moving..take all or not???

Hi Guys,

I know there are loads of threads on this, but I really wanted to know whether you re planning to take all your belongings from your home eg furniture etc when you move to Oz, or whether you are selling the lot and starting fresh. Whichever way you decided why did you reach that decision...and finally for those of you that are lucky to be in Oz already did you make the right decision and why??

Sorry this sounds so warbly but I cant get my head around taking everything and starting fresh!!!

Love

Toni

Hi Toni!

We are beginning to have a massive clear out!

I am going through the kids stuff & taking out stuff I dont think they play with anymore or I think is too young from them now & hiding it in the roof for a while! & if its not missed then it goes to relatives or a charity shop.

As for grown upstuff we are trying to be really ruthless! (We have stuff thats still in boxes taped shut from our last move 4 years ago!!!)

We are planning to take as much as possible of whats left - even pans & kitchen stuff.

We dont have a lot of furniture as Jake is carpenter & we have a lot of built in stuff - but we are expecting to fill a 40ft crate!.

We arent taking out door stuff except my bike & we have donated our climbing frames and outdoor toys to max`s nursery. Garden tools & that kind of thing we wont take. As for inside we are just taking white goods, electrcals, sofa/chairs & furniture we like or is good condition (we are only taking 1 bed & no matresses)

We feel it will be easier for all of us to settle if we have familiar stuff - especially the kids as they are aged 4 - 10 years. We also feel the cost of shipping is worth it compared to the cost of replacing stuff.

I hope this helps when are you hoping to move & where?

We are at the same stage. Just now we are decorating to sell and clearing out and packing as we go. We are not taking any furniture so it is just the small things.

My parents sold everything when they came back to Scotland after being in Oz and I now dont have anything from when I was small ( I know it sounds stupid!!) so I am determined that my 2 girls will take as much as is sensible so they will have stuff, even Celia the fluffy rabbit!!!

I think that if it doesnt have any sentimental value leave behind and start your new life with new things. Maybe easier said than done.

When we arrived in Singapore 3 and a half years ago it was with 2 suitcases! I'm now trying to get rid of all the bulky furniture, which is mostly Ikea stuff and things I don't mind selling or giving away. I figure that it really depends on where you are in your lives, the quality of your stuff and whether it is more economical to ship things over rather than start afresh.

Talking

Thanks so much for all your replies.

My gut tells me to take everything we can always ditch when in Oz. I just want to make sure the kids settle in. Our girls are only 1 and 3, by the time we are out there both will understand there is a big change. They are my main priority!!!

7gotooz - we are hoping to land around Brisbane/Goldcoast. Still in the very early stages of getting there...but have decided to go for broke and put the house on the market in the next few months. We have reached the stage where we need a change. Fingers crossed its Oz as we have loads of points and OH job is on the MODL list, but if not we feel we can conquer the world so will find an alternative. Where are you hoping to go to? and when?

Love

Toni

imeline for a decision
Toni
Hi aspinall

My OH is a carpenter on modl & city & guilds so hoping it all moves through quite quick - judging by other threads we are looking at a 4-6 month to decision (app went in , in oct have file no as of 12th October). Our house is not on market yet - with 4 kids & 2 dogs now 1 dog (We lost our golden retriever in august) we need some major decorating & hope to have house on market in March.

Its a bit scary some houses in our street in West London have sold within hours!! others have not sold for years....!!! Our last home in East London (real Close to Olympic site had people arguing over it in the front garden, it was mad) so we are bit scared at putting it on the market too early as OH is worried that if buyers know we are immigrating & have a time frame that they may try to drop the price close to exchange in our last sale some guy put in an offer an then just a couple of days from exchange asked if we would pay his banks mortgage fees - OH said thats OK if paid ours strangely he backed out & it took 4 further months to get some paranoid new buyers from offer to exchange!! fortunately we had already moved out & theres was no chain involved

I think we will wait until we are asked for pc & meds first then take the plunge

good luck with your house sale & move

Hi,

We are only taking a few orniments and photos. The way we see it, is that all of our stuff proberbly won't come to a £1000, (the sofa is on it's last legs) so whats the point in spending £3500 on shipping it, we may as well spend that money to buy new over there. (Going to get some decent stuff for once in our lives) Plus, you don't know what house you will end up with, so it may not fit or it may look out of place.

Hey Tuckers... Thats one of my niggles taking all the furniture and it just not fitting/suiting our new home!! Most of our furniture is pretty new and in really good condition..I feel grated that I may have to sell it for a few quid when it cost us so much!!!
Thanks a million

7gotooz - wow you areally are quite near now then, good luck with everything. We have friends in perth who really rave about it, so i hope you settle quickly!!

We have been advised not to tell anyone we are emigrating because of the estate agent sneakiness, its kind of another reason for us to sell early..we fully expect to rent in the UK for a while but at least if the house sells before the visa comes in we have that side sorted (fingers crossed!!!)

Love

Toni
