I chose the car I wanted. New not used. Then I emailed all the dealers in the area (and a bit beyond) and asked them for their best price. Then I emailed the dealer nearest to where I was going and asked them to beat the best price by 10%. They didn't do that but they did reduce their price by 10% which was still the cheapest deal and included a reduced price Navman GSP. I paid $500 deposit from the UK via credit card and asked them to have the car ready for when I arrived. I could have paid it all before hand and they said that they would meet me at the airport but at the time it was cheaper to transfer money into my Aus bank account (cost £20) as there were favourable rates at the time) Went into dealer the day after I arrived, signed all the papers, went to my bank and got a bank draft and collected the car the following day. I can't believe how simple it was. Certainly no more complicated than buying a new car in the UK. Dealer offered insurance, but I had a look on the internet and finally went with my Aus bank which was the cheapest. Got my home insurance (contents - as am renting) with them too.
