Can you own property in the UK while being a PR in OZ?

We have just been granted our visa! Yippee! However, we own a property in the UK which my OH's dad lives in....are you allowed to do this when you emigrate to OZ?

Any advice/info. is greatly appreciated!

Yes. My mother lives in Oz (where she has PR) but she owns a house in the UK which is let to tenants.

There is no problem whatsoever as far as the ownership of the land is concerned, but I haven't a clue about the potential tax implications involved. My is 87 and at her age, she doesn't want to be bothered with questions about tax, so I'm turning a blind eye to the tax questions.....

It's working now! Thanks for the info. I don't think we'll be renting it out..we'll probably sell it once something happens...then be subject to Capital Gains Tax! I think they get you one way or another!

Hi Emmy

I'm wondering about CGT too but Alan Collett muttered something about "tapering relief" for CGT?????? I've no idea (I'd never even heard of it) but he seemed to think this is relevant and as he is an international tax expert as well as a Registered Migration Agent, I would certainly take anything he says very seriously indeed.
