Smile 17 year old son

Hi we are currently at the beginning of the process of making the big move, nut we feel as if we have ' hit a brick wall before we start!'

I am a Nurse and also a Midwife and at the present unsure whether to apply for a skilled visa or to get an employer to sponser me (due to lack of funds really).

Our problem is our 17 year old son (18 in July) who is not in college has worked a little before Christmas but now his temporary contract has ended and he is in receipt of no money. I understand up to 18 year olds can be classed as dependants and therefore applying for a visa is fine. But when does this count for my son is it when we first apply for the visa or is it when its granted?...Oh my what a minefield! He also says he doesnt want to come (but hopefully those feelings will pass!)

Thankyou in anticipation

Hi

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that its the age you are when the application is submitted that counts, not the age you are when you finally get your visas.

Get that application in quick!

Good luck

thanks for that. I need to get my skills assessment done before I can apply for visas, Im sure I can get the Visa in before July!...is it better for the sponsered visa or independant regarding my son, or does it not matter?

unfortunately not its not fixed which is what we thought.

We applied when my son was 17 and at college our application 136 (now 175) was submitted in March our son turned 18 in May (this is all last year) we got a CO in August, meds in Sptember meds cleared in December.

In October he decided to leave college (in his wisdom)

We are now battling to prove dependency which looks like its a long shot for us as he is working but not earning enough to be independant but its proving that.

They dont ask for prove until you are at decision stage so we went through all of this and he could still fail

I have heard a small rumour that this may be dependant on the visa you are applying for but not sure of what types that is, sorry.

My son doesnt want to come either but hoping to change is mind also.

Try and gather as much prove he is dependant on you as possible any bills you pay for him is a good one possibly.

Good luck with this.

Hi Nic, I just wanted to say hi as I am a nurse/midwife also just embarking on the move. I have been looking at visas in depth. I am thinking of going on either the skilled migrant 175 or there is another government sponsored one that I could do which I found out about today from gomatilda migrant assistants. They were really helpful. I was going to go for sponsorship from the hospital thatI am hoping to work in but am swaying away from that idea as I want the flexability of working hours and not having to work 38 hour/week. Where are you going to live. I'm going to go to Perth.
I am going to start on the skills assesment soon. Have you started it yet? It would be great to keep in touch to help with any queries. Oh, I have a 16 year old son too who is a little unsure about things. My personal email is my user name for this site.

Cheers Judith

Hi

I have a 17 year son too (god they are happy-not). He is on our visa app, He is 18 in June and we applied in Sept, If your visa isn't granted by the time he is 18 you have to fill in a form 47a.

Hi nic,
I've also got a background in nursing and my daughter was 17yrs and at college at the time we made our application. We put the whole application in on Feb 28th 2007 and she turned 18 in the following April. Perhaps I'm lucky but I wasn't questioned about her financial dependence or college course. She is currently in the Uk with grandparents as she wanted to finish her course and is coming to validate her visa in March. I applied for a 136 skilled independent visa because it gives you PR. With a background in nursing you don't necesarily need to use an agent, sorting out your TRA is relatively straightforward. If I was you I'd get started on the skills asssessment straight away. Go to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board Website and click on the link for overseas educated nurses. Dig out all your certificates/ qualifications get them photocopied and verified at a solicitors. Contact the NMC about verification. Get crackin!!!!

17 year old son

Good morning from Perth!

Hi i work at the King Edward memorial Hospital In Subiaco Perth as an admon officer. Having recently moved here with my family I kneew i could offer you the info you asked!!

When the Aussies talk of skil shortages they're not kidding!! There are many vacancies at all the hospiatls in cluding ours! I also happen to know that you can ask a hospital to sponsor you and they will get the application hurried through. If you like I can put you in touch with someone at the hospital. email me on Tracy.Wilson@health.wa.gov.au

Obviously if you are sponsored you would need to stay at that hospital for some time I'm not sure h ow long that is! I can ask. I work for the Chief Midwife houncho who actually does all the hiring at out hospital!

Your son, he would need to have NOT had his 18th birthday when you put the application in! IE if you put the app in on the day after his birthdday then he would have to apply in his own right and from what you say he would not be succesfull as he has no trace, but I do understand there are ways round it!

Even the application took a long time and his birthday passed that would be fine as the Immi dept have to asses you in the " best posiition at the time you put your application in!!

Have you looked at getting sponsored?

Also may I ask how old you are?

Regards

Tracy
