Hi Jim,

We (OH and two kids) are currently living on the Sunshine Coast as OH is out here on a student visa studying bricklaying. We arrived June '07 and course started at the TAFE July '07.

Please feel free to PM me or ask away, what sort of things is it that you wanted to know?

Heather

Hi Heather,

Just read your blog and it sounds like your OH has already been working as a bricklayer in the UK. If that's the case I presume he wasn't qualified, hence the reason your on a student visa.
How many hours is your OH spending at college? And how many weeks holiday does he get off from college/tafe per year.
Did the tafe organise p/t work for him or did he have to find it for yourself.

Only 5 months til I start at Melbourne tafe now, can't wait.

Cheers from a very cold and windy Halifax. Oh, it's trying to snow as well.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Years ago OH did work as a bricklayer but not for the last 10 years! OH does Mon/Tue/Weds at TAFE and Thur/Fri working. He gets 17 weeks a year semester (I think!) He broke up early Nov and goes back late Feb, with a few other weeks off.
No the TAFe did not organise the part time work (nor has it for the hairdressers etc), which is a bit of a bone of contention at the mo!

It might be a good idea that as soon as you arrive you start looking for that part time work, as there will be others on your course also looking for that work, so the sooner the better, as you need 900 hours for TRA and in addition to that as part of the course you need another 110 hours per semester, which might vary slightly depending on which course you do (which we weren't aware of, but it hasn't really been too much of a problem).

What is it that you are going to study?

Good luck

Heather

Hi Heather

I'm studying Bricklaying at Melbourne Tafe, so hopefully I'll get a similar schedule for my days at college. The only experience I've ever had with the construction industry was driving a Cement Mixer for 4 months. My younger brother has been a Brickie in England since school (about 8 years) and to be honest, he's not the sharpest tool in the box, so if he can do it, I'm pretty sure I can. Although from what I can remember, he didn't spend a great deal of time at college (one day a week I think).

Looking forward to getting to Melbourne now to warm the old bones up!

Cheers

Jim
