I know Christmas and New Year can be an emotional time for people, but this year seemed especially so.
Richard and I ha ha (sorry I alway's laugh at this because of Keeping up Apperances) went over to my best friends house on New Years Eve. She had a few to drink and got a bit upset.
In fact she was crying her eye's out. I didn't know what to say! Of course I will miss her as much as she does me BUT I'm the one leaving to start a new life. She will be here, doing the same job (we work together) going to the same gym and shopping at the same old shops.
It made me feel a bit guilty as I am really looking forward to going to Australia, also got me thinking about my other friends and family... They all seem to be really happy for us, no one else has been upset.... I don't know if they are putting on a front for us though.
At work this week my friend appologised for getting upset and said she is happy for all of us! We have agreed that she should't come to the airport though! I don't think she would handle it too well.
What do you say to people that you love very much, when you are leaving them? Words just don't seem to be enough.
Exact thing happened to us! Our BF,s were round for a drink or two on friday night and we got on to the subject of us moving and before we knew it my mates crying her eyes out! myself and my husband were quite surprised but touched at the same time as skes the only one to sho any emotion yet! i doubt she,ll be at the airport either!!
Don't you feel awful.... We have know each other for 22 years, which is a long time! Our children grew up together etc.
What makes it worse for this friend in particular is that she only has one sister and they don't really get on. I suppose to her I am more like family,
it defo pulled on the heart strings, but she did then say "just ignore me its just the vodka! im happy for you both, and i,ll be out to visit like a shot!" i think it just hit her on friday we actually mean what we say and its not just us dreaming or us feelinf "fed up" we are really going to do it!!
Tempt your friend with the idea of a holdau in Australia once you and Ricjard are sttled out there. Show her pix of the areas where you might settle and so on, I suggest.
Who knows? You might get her and her own family's imaginations fired up as well?
my best friend of over 20 years has been really quiet since I told her our plans. I asked her to do a statement to put as supporting eveidenc for our de facto relationship. She seemed to take ages, when I chased her up it seems that she thought that if she didn't do it quickly it would be longer til we went. We move to lincolnshire from hertfordshire 5 years ago so live over 2 hours away from her anyway and now only see each other a few times a year. She has since said she is happy for me and knows we will stay in touch she just struggled to get her head around it!!
I know we will both be in tears when it comes to leaving.
Take care

My best friend of 32 years was behind us 110% when we told her we were moving to Oz. But the night before I left she came down to see me and was fine until we said our goodbyes then she broke her heart I will never forget the look on her face as she walked away from me.
My friend was also very tearful and in the last few weeks cried everytime she saw me, she kept prolonging the goodbyes and even came round late the night before we departed and cried again. It was very touching and she was like this because she loved us, she wanted to see the children grow up (both are children were similar ages and at the same school), and she was sad for herself but happy for us ... it showed us how much our friendship means to here - and friendships like that aren't easily broken despite the miles.

I think its pretty normal for our close friends to act in this way ,,its hard but something we all have to go through.I think airport goodbyes are a big mistake even for family ,especially if you are bringing children.Grin and bear it ,it does get better but remember when your here and doing lots of new things they are stuck in the same old routine but with a big gap were you used to be !! email and msn are great ways of keeping folks at home updated as is facebook if you dont want to send millions of emails!!
keep smiling
