Leptospirosis

Good advice Alliekate

One of the strains of Leptospirosis is carried by rats so it is wise to keep them away from rivers/becks/streams etc or any places where rats are known to be if your dogs has had this vaccine omitted.

We had to actually take in a copy of the legislation to the vet to ensure neither of our dogs had the leptospirosis vac - you have to be on top of it cos a lot of UK vets (cos they don't deal with emigration much) don't know the new rule that came out last week or last month (it changes all the time!)

Our Choff had to be re-tested for lepto levels three times before she could come out. (ie she failed the blood test twice) and I have heard of other dogs that have their trips delayed for six months till their lepto count was acceptable for immigration.

To anyone importing a pet - print out the AQIS quidleines and show them to your vet, and it should then be ok. But definitely DO NOT VACCINATE FOR LEPTO within a year of wanting to travel.
Thanks for that we are planning on going later this year all three have now had boosters
without lepto, will definately print that out x

I'm sure your dogs will be fine. Dylan (my border collie pup) was just unlucky to contract Leptospirosis. His symptoms were vomiting, lethargy and signs of jaundice. I had to really push my vet to investigate more and do blood tests. Thank god I did otherwise we would surely have lost him. Not trying to worry you but if your dog is a bit off colour look out for these signs and mention to the vet that your dogs have not received the lepto vaccine.

Didn't catch programme - video kaput and work interfering with my life again! - but have trawled Vic gov websites and cats are welcome and fine as long as they are microchipped, registered and wearing their personal tag! Only if they ar caught without the above are they in trouble...... or rather the owners are. They will be stuck in the pound for 8 days and then a decision taken. Happy ... Happy .... Happy. Knew in my heart of hearts noone could be that cruel. Hoorah!!!!!
