Pondering......Adelaide

Question?????

We arrived in sunny Perth 8 weeks ago and although we really like it here, we have had trouble with neighbours in both holiday rental and now rented home. This can happen to anyone and anywhere and is probably just bad luck.

But we have come to realise that the homes are lovely but very close together. From the front they look ok but in the back garden we can hear everything our neighbours are saying!!!! because they are so close. You really do not have much of a garden in a house priced under $600,000.

So we are now thinking perhaps Adelaide is better because being cheaper you get more land and neighbours at a comfortable distance

Has anyone ever moved to Oz and then transferred to a different state? We did do our research before we came and knew what the prices were like and the land sizes and felt that Perth was right for us. But having never been to Australia before, we are now wondering if a) it would be a wise decision to move to Adelaide b) how much it would cost to transport our stuff - again? c) about the drought d) we have heard the water quality is poor - can you drink it?

Helpppp.
cheers
Donna and Gary

gazza, try asking in the states & territories site of PIO, [South Australia]
I think you are just having a run of bad luck with the neighbours, that can happen anywhere.
To get decent blocks of land these days, you have to either pay big dollars, look at older properties, or move away from the city, I think you will find it is the same everywhere you go in Oz these days.
What you have to remember is, wherever house prices & the cost of living is lower, so are the wages.

That is so true! Most people here (Adelaide) seem to live in 'normal' size lots, and thanks to proximity and build, we can hear our neighbours too! Luckily they are all pretty fair and it's unusual (and therefore bearable) for it to be too annoying. And no, wages here are not great - I watched one of the current affairs programmes (a couple of years ago?) where an American professor was explaining that if you put the average wage in SA against the average cost of a house, we would work out as one of the most expensive states! I suppose if you come in with a lot of money and don't need a mortgage this wouldn't really concern you though.

We can -and do- drink the water, although it can taste nice or nasty (IMHO) depending where you are. The drought doesn't seem any worse here than anywhere else, and at times our restrictions have been a lot lighter than other states.

I understand your point, but perhaps you would be better to either just pop over and have a look at us here, or just check out the real estate sites to find out what you could afford and exactly where it would be. If you are prepared to move out of Adelaide (or out of easy commuting distance) I'm sure you could buy a bigger property. Or you might just be lucky, or have heaps of money!

As Billy says come over to ours anytime and see the size of plots here. They are not masssive but we aren't living in our neighbours pockets either. I will ask in work about the puppy today you never no they might take the puppy to the house with them & then you can come over to ours tonight. If they dont just come down for a few hours for a chat.

Wise words award to Lazy Cow :)

Popping over for a look might not be a bad idea.

You have probably just had a bad run of luck and need to have a look at a lot more suburbs.

The trend is towards small blocks here I'm afraid.
There are plenty of older property's on larger blocks here though. The estate down from us - Huntingdale Estate in Onkaparinga Hills has nice large blocks.

Perhaps have a good wander through Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au

Good luck:)

Sa La Vie

Looking on realestate and aussiemove does help because u get an idea of house styles, distance to CBD, land sizes etc. and we r doin plenty of that.

We r currently renting in Butler, which is about 40K from Perth CBD, but it's more coastal which is where the expense comes from.

Maybe we will have to take a reccie to Adelaide and Brisbane because from what we have seen u do get more for your money. Wage drop may balance out. But there are pros and cons to every state, and obviously nowhere is perfect, sa la vie.

No we r not rich ......... just a normal family with 2 kids and a new puppy

To TomthePom, the problems we have had with neighbours at the holiday let were not a direct or personal attack against us. We just lived opposite a neurotic english lady who beat her husband and threw stuff at him in the street, smashed flower pots on his car and was screaming hysterically with the foulest mouth for hours at a time. Hearing and seeing violence is not something my kids are used to, they and we found it very upsetting, especially as it went on everyday...........

THEN HE LEFT...........aaaaah peace

Our rented home has a family who too scream and swear not stop on one side. Their child is around the same age as our youngest 8, but she swears and screams like a banshee... they r Australian. On the other side the people are from South Africa and like to stay up chatting loudly but that I don't mind because they are not being abusive to eachother, they r just enjoying the warm evening, that's nice. Although they did set fire to the bin the this morning in the street......lol

We r quite far out, so we r going to calm down after the advice being given on POM and take a look around here just further away from the coast, maybe into some older areas with bigger plots. Failing that maybe we coul plant some thick trees or bushes for sound proofing lol.

We will come down and meet up with you Jeanette and Billy, looking forward to some socialising and a break from the madness.

Please don't get us wrong it is not that Perth is wrong it is.....just....rotten luck. Hey but u never know 3rd time lucky........ the house we do buywill be just right, fingers crossed.

thanks for replies

Hi there Donna & Gary

Have you thought about the Hamersley / Warwick area? We bought mid-2007 in Hamersley and found a wonderful 3X2 on a decent size block (720 sqm) for less than $500k. It's a great area as is only 5kms from the beach and has great transport links (Freeway, trains and Reid Highway).

good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Cheers, Clare

If going South of the river. You can't go wrong with Rockingham with its new train line. I love it down here. Big blocks of 800m^2 and prices unde 500k and close to the beach - one of the best in Perth in IMHO

Hi Gazza - I have to agree with Tim, also live in Waikiki but there are many suburbs in the Rockingham area with house prices anything from $350k upwards, depending on size etc. We have a 640sqm block on a new development where quite a few houses are under $500k but older properties are usually on much bigger blocks. Shopping Centre is being updated and now we have the train which is only 30+ minutes to CBD Perth at $6 return off-peak! Beaches are lovely, unspoiled and spacious - couldn't ask for much more.

Regards, Cheryl
