mobile phone problem

Hi I am a new member to poms in oz, I just wanted to know if a uk mobile phone would work with a australian sim card.
What band will work in oz or does that not matter.
Can you let me know if anyone has tried this and what was the outcome pls.

Your UK mobile will work fine providing it is not locked into a network.

I have been here 3 months now and am still trying to sort out my phone

It is currently locked with orange, I have contacted them several times via e-mail as found it impossible to get through on the phone as I am no longer a current customer. After receiving several pieces of wrong information from them I have finally been told they can unlock for me for 20 pounds and will contact me via phone to do so. I am still waiting watch this space.

I dont want to change my phone as it is the LG shine which is quite new over here. I have been told by people over here it tends to be UK companies beginning with O - ie orange and o2 so my advice would be to check with your company before you leave to save you a lot of trouble.

Yep, i was with Virgin and they gave me the unlock code within a day of asking for it. worked straight away. Do it before you leave tho, just one less thing to deal with when you get here.

Both our Nokias and my samsung were unlocked so we just popped new sims in them and were working straight away.

We had much the same problems that your having but we were with o2. In the end we found a small electronics company in Brisbane CBD who unlocked the phones for us for $25 dollars and did it within an hour. This could maybe be an option for you?
