Running a car

What are all the legal things you have to do when you own/run a car? Are road tax, insurance and MOTs compulsery like they are in the UK?

Depends which state you are moving to.
WA has no MOT. You pay to register (rego) the car six monthly or yearly, whichever you want to do at the time the payment is due, this also covers for third party personal injury.
Insurance isn't compulsory, but recommended, you can take out third party property damage only or comprehensive insurance. That's it in WA.

If memory serves, the same goes for QLD. No "MOT" as such, but if you're selling a car then your are legally required to have a recent roadworthy certificate. Registration can be paid half yearly or annually, and this includes your third party insurance. All additional forms of insurance are optional. In my experience, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the cost of motor insurance in Australia. When I moved to the UK, I found it to be unbelievably expensive.
