Which Passport to use?

I have just booked our flights to do a reckie to Melbourne in April
As I was born in Oz, me and my sons now have oz passports as well as british. On the online booking with Sinapore Air I had to put passport details down for all of us.

I have put the British passport details down - Does anyone know if this is right?

I think i've read somewhere that people with dual nationality should leave the country (uk) on their Uk passport and enter (oz) on the oz passport and the other way round on the return leg. Does this make sense. Hope I've done it right.

Cheers for any help

Lolly

Hi there,

I too was born in Australia and flew to Sydney last December with Singapore AIRLINES. What you have said is correct, you must use UK passport when you leave this country and show Oz passport when entering Melbourne. Don't worry!

I have dual citizenship and hence two passports , but it appears that I am the odd one out here !! .. I have travelled back to Britain about 10 times now . The Aussies require you leave and re-enterAustralia on your Aussie passport , however if you try and leave Britain on your British passport there will be no visa to enter Australia in it and a few moments of panic till you produce your Aussie passport .Australia will not issue a re-entry permit for a British passport if you hold an Australian one also , so you are forced to leave Britain on your Aussie one .. A bit confusing , but that has been my experience of it all , and as I said I've made the trip many times now .

Hmmm, Its been about 8 years since I did the trip? Is it the case that UK immigration check your right of entry to Aus or the airline at check-in to avoid the pain of having to return you if you're not visa'd? or maybe things have just got stricter in these paranoid times???:)

Dave is right. You now have to show the airline that you have the right to enter Australia. I know in years gone by you didn't have to do this but you do now.
Have never been asked at boarding in Sydney to prove I could enter Uk, but was asked, last year, at boarding on the return journey to show Australian passport.

Thanks all for your help.

So do you think i'm ok then? Have given Singapore Airlines my british passport details but will obviously have my oz passport with me to show I have the right to enter Oz.

I have emailed Singapore Airlines to check but havent heard back yet. Think i'll call them in a few days if I havent heard.

I know i'm probably worrying unneccessarily but thats what I do :)

Cheers

Lolly

Hi Fatpom

Its because the airlines worry that if someone turns up in Oz without either an Australian passport or a valid visa in a British one, DIAC have the power to fine the airline heavily and also have the power to order them to repatriate the pasenger, at the airline's own expense if need be.

Cheers

Gill

That's exactly right Gill. I work for Virgin Atlantic, and confirm that our check in system will not actually allow someone to check in untill they have their passport scanned, and either citizenship status (ie Oz Passport) or Visa verified (Other passport holders)

As for having your passport checked by the authorities leaving the UK, it's all a bit hit and miss as to whether they actually have anyone doing passport checks on that day. I only ever seem to get my passport checked coming IN to the UK, of course enetering and leaving Australia, even as an Aussie citizen you still need to complete an incoming/outgoing passenger card..

So in short... Aussies - you need to check in in London using your Aussie passport. Coming back, it makes no odds, as the British government does not collect the same type of data (as far as I am aware), but if you ghold an Australian passport, then you need to present that one to the authorities as you leave Oz..
