Mobile Phones in OZ

Hi everyone

My mobile phone contract here has run out and we hope to go to OZ in February, so if I buy a new mobile here now with a pay as you go card, when i get to oz can I use my new phone from here and just get an Australian Pay as you Go contract to use with it?

Hope this makes sense, and advise appreciated

Thanks

Lynda

Hope so - that's what I want to do.

Most UK mobiles are dual band GSM phones. These will work in Australia on the following networks, possibly others: Vodafone Pacific Limited, Telstra MobileNet, Singtel Optus Limited.

USA uses a different standard - a different band so thatyou need a tri band GSM phone over there. As I said though, Australia uses the same as us, plus other bands for 3G.

I'm not an expert on this, just looked it up on GSM Roaming - Australia

Cheers,

Spock.

Lynda,

Yes I'm pretty sure that 99% of phones currently available to buy in the UK will work in Oz (there are some exceptions such as the iPhone). You will almost certainly have to have the phone unlocked (your local mobile shop should be able to do most phones pretty cheaply) to use with your chosen Aussie network.

Mrs KP,

I decided that discretion was the better part of cowardice and sat watching it in my hotel room instead!

The post above was at half time, on my way back to raid the mini-bar. Have to head back there again now, I could do with a large brandy now.

Mr KP,

It was superb, extremely close, I think I bit my nails down to the elbow. The England shirt will be paraded far and wide tomorrow. It would be rude not to really. Must set my alarm now for 5.00am to watch NZ v France. I hope that NZ win so that I can taunt my French colleagues and well as the Aussie ones next week!

Hell, no spirits in the mini bar. How bad is that?

Dave

When I was in QLD in April, I went into the Virgin phone shop and bought a pay as you go sim card and it worked fine in the phone I had brought from the UK. In fact I have just bought a new mobile and will take the Oz sim card back with me next month. All I have to do now is learn to use the mobile I bought.
Anybody got a teenager handy?

Watch out if you buy a Telstra Pay As You Go simcard and you want to use it outside Oz. I have one in a Nokia phone and when I tried to use it on a trip back to the UK it was sorry mate, you don't get global roaming on a PAYG contract. Your unused credit also expires if you don't buy more within a certain time.

So I bought a UK Virgin PAYG simcard and it works fine here in Oz on the Optus network. Full global roaming and no problems about credit expiring either.
