Some people set traps to catch roaming cats. They're presented to the council for disposal. By that I mean, if the cat is chipped you'll probably get it back together with a fine, or if its not chipped its destroyed... probably???
If you don't believe me google it, you will quickly find details on many Australian council web sites.
By way of explanation as someone has already stated they cause
terrible damage to the unique Australian fauna & are responsible for a lot of the extinction of small reptiles (maybe even small marsupials, not sure?). The local fauna has developed over many millennia to roam free of carnivores like cats & they just can't escape them... its a killing field scenario for cats.
By the way I'm not a cat hater, I wouldn't buy into the cat catcher scene myself, but they (cats) shouldn't be here. Admittedly its all a bit late for that but the councils are now starting to target stray cats & if your little moggy gets caught up in it all... too bad, its a fine or a funeral.
