Pro's and con's of moving to Oz

I have already left a lengthy post in Welcome but realised about this one!! Stupid me

My husband has never been to Oz but would happily put the house up for sale today and move tommorrow. I am not so sure. I am Australian born when my parents emigrated in 1964 and came back in 1978. I remember it from a 7 year olds eye but what is it like now. Hubby works in the oil industry andhe thinks it would be a far better life than here for us all (girls 9 & 4) He is 41 so really we have to make a decision soon to get the ball rolling.

How did you all come to your descisions. Any help would be great as my head is spinning thinking about it all the time.

...Hi!..just read your post and have been in a similar place to you..my parents emigrated to Perth in 1966 with my two older brothers and myself at the age of three, and came back in 1977. My younger brother was born there in that time. All of my brothers are out there now with their families, and i have been back for a few years with my own family. We had to return to the UK for a short while, and are returning to Perth next March. I think i went back with all the memories from my childhood, but as always time moves on and things change. It's strange...it feels familiar but also not quite home. It was great going back to visit old neighbourhoods and schools, etc. but personally i think you have to start your new life with your family...make new memories. When i went back it took a while to settle for us all, especially as my family had never been there, but we loved Perth..the place..the people and lifestyle and even though quite scary at first, also very exciting!! It has given my family the opportunity to see a different part of the world and have fantastic experiences..i'll never forget my husband coming home from a road trip to Kalgoorlie... coming through the door and saying how fantastic it was to drive a Road Train along a desolate red road, with the radio blaring out "I come from a Land Down Under" - and this from a man who is fiercely patriotic! I hope this helps and good luck with whatever you decide

Hi Mandy1970

It's funny you should write this as this is what I have been saying to my husband. His parents emigrated and then came back to the uk when he was about 8 and ever since then he has been itching to get back but it's not going to be the same it's bound to be different.

I on the other hand am not like your hubby and it has taken me a long time to come round to the idea, only really changing since I have had the children and that is when I thought I could give it a go. We have come to the conclusion that if we don't do it now we will never know and we don't want to be looking back in 10 years time thinking, well it's too late now to try.

The more I think about it the more I find myself coming around to the idea. My main stumbling block is my Dad. He had major heart surgery last year and if me and my brother both went he would be on his own with just my step mum. I phoned my mum tonight (she moved to Turkey 5 years ago aged 58!!) and she told me how she felt when she left her parents but also thought that if we mentioned it to Dad he would be tempted to go too.

My Mum is full of encouragement as she doesn't regret her descision to emigrate all those years ago and has already checked out flights from Istanbul to Perth!! So tonight I have been righting a list of "FOR" and "AGAINST" both are equal but I must admit that the "FOR"'s are starting to look better. It is all soooooo scary.

It is very very scary you're right there and my main stumbling block is also my parents.

Although they have no major health issues (touch wood) they are getting older plus I am very close to them anyway and worry that I will just simply miss them to the point where I can't settle but they are being very encouraging and supportive and I can't fault them.
