hi my husband is a carpet layer (floor finisher), which is on the modl list and he has submitted all his work experience statements off to tra but i expect they will send them back...............we are absolutely gutted at the mo as he has been doing it for the last 10 years but they never had formal training back then and he learnt everything on the job. He is good at his job and does not mind being assessed if this is possible.
My husband knows many plumbers and painters and tilers who could now face the same problem, my question is we have been to australia now twice and from what we see the trades people such as carpet layers also got taught on the job so how do they expect carpet layers here to have 900 hours formal education. Carpet laying is a craft, a skill in which you use your hands, some jobs just are not formal and are learnt on the job.....he did an apprenticeship but with the new changes it will not be enough......we just can't beleive these changes can stick as this will mess up so many peoples chances of going.

I think personally that TRA realised, Vetasses were charging more money, and thought we can do that and just maybe they are going to follow the same route by bringing out a skills test system in place of pathway d?
Just a thought, Got to hang in there and see what happens??
Frustrating I know...

So we found a sponsorship way hey hey
Destination - ADELAIDE SA
we are in the same situation, my oh is a painter & decorator and he to learnt on the job, had a 2year apprentership with his first company over 8 years ago, now works for a project management company as there main painter & decorator, his trade is on the modl but we can do nothing to get there, you cant be sponsored by any government as they want your trade assessed, and the TRA ont assess on experiance alone so its a catch 22 situation, the thing is hes already 43 so the time is running out for us........my brother is already there and going for his perminant residancy but i have no idea ho long it will take, keep me posted as to how you get on

kids meds finalised 1st May
our xrays finalised 8th May
Just waiting now
Those affected are welcome to send me their CVs if they want me to distribute their details through my network to employers and agencies in an effort to secure an employer nomination (in turn facilitating a permanent residency visa).
Employer nominations under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme do NOT require a skills assessment classification.
Best regards.

it looks to me as if there will shortly be another announcement soon as there is so much confusion over this..........or else they will simply have to take some trades off the modl list.............i don't want to get sponsored as you are tied in to one emploer and i want my freedom and will earn far more if i sub contract to many firms....when i went to the gold coast this year i had so many companies screaming out for fitters and layers so i can't understand.
Surely they will change this or at least make a viable route for people in these skilled trades with no formal training other than on the job, because as it stands right this minute there isn't one.

No, you are not tied to one employer if you are granted a PERMANENT employer sponsored visa. I am NOT talking about the long term temporary employer sponsored visa under subclass number 457.
I suggest you might consider this as a means to an end ...
Best regards.

I know how it works, recruitment companies like here take 25% of your money, now why would anyone want that when there are so many jobs there. No dis-respect it could be a means to an end but i would not like to put my family in a situation where i have to be miserable in my job for two years or so earning far less then other layers giving some recruitment company 25% of my hard earned cash every month, and if im fed up and want a change i can't because if i walk out on this job then my kids and i have to return to the uk. I wanna go to australia to work less and chill out a bit more, not to work harder and longer.

on saying that maybe i should accept this route as there are many pro's too for it, one being ill get there faster. If i did id have to be super disiclipned as my family's future really would be in my hands. But i guess after two years ill be free to move on, yeah not so bad, ill thing about it some more and get back to you.

i really feel for you jason i'm in the same boat being a carpet fitter myself waiting to see if my tra will get sent back i've beeen a fitter for 21 years and trained by someone who reached the carpet fitter of the year finals 4 years in a row what better training can you get but it counts for nothing when i was training there wasn't a single course in the country so was is one to do.
At the moment the only thing i can think of if my tra gets sent back is to see what qualifications they will accept because you can be assesed as a master fitter by th nicf which is a higher standard than there own qaulifications but only if they recognise them fingers crossed for you mate

Obviously you don't know how it works, Jason!
Where do recruitment companies enter into the equation? Why are you tied to the employer for 2 years?
I think you may need to do some further research. You can telephone me to discuss further (Melbourne number +61 3 9935 2929), or telephone my colleague John Sylvester on Southampton (UK) number 023 80 488777.
Best regards.
