For NSW & Qld you don't sit a driving test anymore. I think you still have to do a written test in NSW (multiple choice)? Check out the state gov web site for the state you're planning to live in.

You don't have to in WA - just change your licence over (you have 3 motnhs to do it)

Warning using licenses as security

Dear All... Check this out. A friend in Transport sent me this email.

Please read this. Quite a big worry, I found mine! Pretty scary stuff.

Check your driver's license information on-line.... Now you can see
anyone's driver's license on the internet, including your own! It asks
for U.S. info, but unfortunately it works for Canadian, English,
Australian and New Zealand licenses as well.

This is really scary. I definitely removed mine. I suggest you do the
same. Go to the website and check it out. Just enter your name and city,
but don't insert a State - just leave it as 'Select a State' and see if
yours is on file. I know it's from the US but the database is international and just like visa cards if you have ever handed yours over for security it may have ended up here.

After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked "Please
Remove".

Go to: www.license.shorturl.com <http://www.license.shorturl.com>

Hey
I did that for my wife and it's uncanny.
Seriously i heard on another thread that if you go to Queensland you can exchange your UK drivers license for an Aussie one no problem.............except one, your UK license has to be of the photograph type and NOT the paper one.
I just applied for a photo one to replace a knackered paper one here in UK and it only took 5 days.
Good Luck

Check this page from NSW licensing

International drivers

Extract below which is relevant and shows UK holders do not need to do knowledge test

Recognition of licences from certain countries

The recognition of licences from certain countries was agreed nationally and commenced in NSW on 20 May 2002. Customers are exempt from the practical driving/riding test if they hold an acceptable licence from one of the recognised countries. The exemption only applies to applicants for Class C (car) and Class R (rider) licences.
As from 17 January 2005 customers are exempt from the car and rider knowledge test if they hold an acceptable licence from one of the recognised countries. It is recommended that these applicants read the Road Users' Handbook to familiarise themselves with the current road rules in NSW.
The RTA reserves the right to require customers to undertake a knowledge test or driving/riding test, and may not issue a licence until it is satisfied that the overseas licence is valid.
Recognised countries
  • Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark,
  • Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey,
  • Ireland, Isle of Man (licences issued since 1 April 1991), Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg,
  • Malta (licences issued since 2 January 2004), Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore,
  • Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA.
Makes me happy....I took my test over 20 years ago and have some nasty driving habits that would be difficult to get out of in 3 months!!!

Cheers
Geoff
