This has probably been asked before, but I'm struggling to find a thread on it. What is the process for exchanging a UK license for an Australian one? I gather it's different in different states and not neccessarily valid for all states.
Hi Cara, it seems like it rather depends on who you talk to. My daughter who is in NSW, has just been to the RTA and they have told her to simply drive on her UK licence until her visa changes to permanent, in about 12 months, they also advised that she would need to carry her passport complete with her temporary visa shown in it. When her visa becomes permanent she has been told to simply return to their office and they will issue her with an Australian license. However, the last time she had visited the RTA office they had told her she would need to complete an Australian written test before they would issue a license to her. So as I said. it would seem to be who you talk to, although I'm sure there must be a "correct" way of going about it.
That sounds confusing. We will be going on a PR visa and I've heard that we will have 3 months to change to an Australian license (not long when you have so much else to do as well).
Hiya
We got our QLD licenses a few months ago. No trouble, just walk into the Transport Dept, filled in the forms etc, paid $68 for 5 yrs and they give it you there n then.
Hubbys now got a job in Sydney, so will need to do it again when we get there !!
Dont know how it works in NSW though.
In WA go into the licence office, fill out forms, have an eye test, take your photo, pay your money and a transfer fee there you go. The receipt will act as your licence.until your new one is posted out to you. I changed my address on line when we moved.

I'm sick of following my dreams, I'm just going to ask them where they're going and hook up with them later

Thank you for putting my mind at ease Sam and Ali. We are hoping to go to WA so this one is particularly reassuring.

Hi Cara,
The process in NSW is to go down to RTA with your current UK license. You need to have proof of permanent address (utility bill) and ID (passport) (they are quite strict as your Aussie license will act as proof of ID for loads of stuff) , give them money, they take your pic and give you your license within 10 mins - no hanging around waiting weeks for the DVLA to issue it! As someone else mentioned, you can only drive on your UK license for 3 months so need to get it done pretty soon after arrival.
Hope this helps!
