I want to sell our house in the UK and make a fresh start in Oz but my husband thinks we should hold onto it and rent, he is thinking that when the 2012 games arrive we will make a huge profit ( we live approx 15 miles from London) but I cant bare the thought of hanging onto it for another 5 years, I just fill that if we have somthing to go home too, that we wont make a proper go of it in Oz, and if it gets tough we can call it a day and go home, is anybody else in the same situation.

SELL IT!!!
Grab the money and run,the olympics are only for two weeks there might be a market for renting in 2012 but thats about all ,anyway you want to be long gone once gordon brown settles in and starts tightening the screws on home owners.
Besides australia is booming right now and bricks and morter are as good an investment out there as they are here.
Hi Joanne,
We also considered renting out our house instead of selling when we emigrated last year. However, we came to the conclusion that if we rented it out we would be reliant on the agency handling everything if they told us things needed doing or if there was a problem with tenants as obviously it's rather too far/expensive to go back and keep a check on it yourself!
Obviously it's a personal decision but we decided that we would sell up and not have the worry of what was happening with the house!
Where in Oz you heading and when you hoping to arrive?

SELL IT!
Otherwise, like you say, you will have a "get out" and not really give Oz the go that it and you deserve!
We thought about that as well. We lived in Goodmayes and had a flat right on the line to Stratford!! We could be from our flat door to Liverpool St in 25 mins!
We still made a profit!
Cut your losses, sell, run and have a great new life!
Where in Oz u heading?

We also considered renting our house, but decided to sell. Two reasons really a) Thought it would be too much hassle dealing with agents when things go wrong and b) thought it would be too easy to say, lets just go back! We really want to give Australia our all and for us that meant selling the house to allow us to put roots firmly down and buy our own house, hopefully with a much smaller mortgage!!!!

Thanks guys, we first thought we would go to Perth and I had doubts about house prices, weather etc, so I then looked into Victoria but my husband had doubts and then a friend suggested the Gold Coast so for the last few weeks I have been trying to get as much info as possible on either Maroochydore or Mooloolaba, we thought about a reckie to activate or visa's but we could sure use the money elsewhere, so if anybody has any info on these areas I would be very grateful.

Hi Joanne,
We are heading for the Gold Coast and have also been having the same discussion regarding selling the house. For me I was worried if we had to come home (only have a temp visa) then we would be unable to buy anything. The other problem is if we dont sell then we will be living hand to mouth in OZ with no capital behind us and still having financial commitments in the UK, I dont want this. So we will sell the house, clear off any outstanding finances, take the rest of our money and start our new live with a clean slate. If we do have to come home then we will have to deal with that in 4 years time.
The Gold Coast is a fantastic area, I have visited lots of places in OZ including: Sydney, Cairns, Whitsundays (fantastic for hols), Airlie Beach, Townsville, Magnetic Island, Sunshine coast (which is beautiful). I always get pulled back to Gold Coast I think a. as we have family there, b. It feels very much like the "north east" in respect that people actually speak to you and help you out etc, I feel that that area could become my home.
You could have peep at these sites see if they help you at all.

Hi Joanne
Just wanted to say if you were researching the Gold coast Mooloolaba and Maroochydore are on the Sunshine Coast.
Sorry if you knew that jsut wanted to make sure you were looking in the right areas
We had a good hard think about this one and decided to sell. Partly our reasons were if we had a house to go back to then we may not have settled here. We needed the money to use to buy a house here. I didn't want to rent the house out in the UK because I don't know how I would have felt if I'd had to live there again and someone else had been in it. I didn't want the hassle of having to sort out a house from the other side of the world, managers where expensive, what if it was empty for a while - I'd have been paying rent here and a mortgage in UK.
