I haven't got a sister so can't comment on the Debbie/Karen thing - all I know is that if I had been a boy my parents with thinking of calling me Kevin (obviously had a thing for K's in those days!) - I'm glad I'm a girl, no offence to any Kevin's out there!!!!! Thankfully when my brother came along 2 1/2 years later they were over their K thing and he's called Jeffrey, which spookily enough is the same name as my husband although he's always been called Jeff! It's funny how fashions/trends in names change and then have a revival years later.......
