Question Advice on Melbourne suburb and first arrival

I am in need of some advice!
I was approved on Thursday for my skilled indepedent visa. My family and I intend to live in Melbourne and we intend to go in January 2008. I spent a year in various parts of Australia a few years ago but do not have enough knowledge to choose a Melbourne suburb. We require a junior school for my son (age 5) and we would like to be within striking distance of the city. Other than that just what anyone else wants - a bit of space, some amenities, perhaps close to beach!

Also, is it possible to organise a rental from the UK so that when we arrive in January 2008we have somewhere to go? or is there a better option for short term rental on arrival?

Lots of questions here!

Any ideas?

Congrats on your visa - well done!!!!
Were heading for Melbourne, but Mornington Peninsular - its lovely and has everything, but it might be a bit far from the CBD for you by the sounds of it - but worth a look, its loverly. Furnished places are really hard to come by I understand.
So check out the link below for holiday rentals for when you first arrive. We're gonna book from here (I have been told you can use your UK credit card online to pay). Were shipping our stuff over, but need a holiday rental for first few weeks, so thought a holiday home would be ideal as it has everything you need.
Some people have mentioned caravans & camper vans too, coz its cheaper....... Lots of people heading for Point cook/hoopers crossing too.
Oh......Dont forget January is the school holiday time over in Oz (high season), so rentals will be more expensive then........ might be worth going over a bit before or a bit after - just a thought!!!!!!

Been in Melbourne 8 months. We live in Bentleigh. Direct Train link to the city takes about 25 minutes. Beach is about a 10 minute drive.....plenty of good schools in this area - parks, playgrounds etc. If you need further advise please PM me.

Hi
Glad to hear you are lovin' it in Oz! We are hoping to head somewhere around your way by the end of the year. OH Electrician. We have been looking at Geelong as well and all around that area but haven't visited it. Relatives in Philip Island and Pakeham. Just waiting for the visa - seems neverending!

Hi
We are hoping to come to Melbourne - have no idea of where to live except don't want to be too close to city - at least 1 hour away. Did you have a job to go to or did you wait til you got there?
