Hi Sandy
Cant help with answer to your queswtion but theres a 'driving in oz' thread running at mo where l have added a question also relating to young drivers, l have a son who will be 17 in sept and we hope to be in oz Jan 08 so it will be pushing it a bit for him to have passed his test in the uk so l asked bout taking it in oz but yours is a v. good point also as we may be in same situation.
l am sure someone will add the answer here if not then tack it on to the other thread!

Hi lynandsean
I am living on the gold coast with my husband and 18 year old son who is taking his driving test here in oz the first thing you need to do is buy a copy of the road rules book fron an oz news agents once this has been read you then go to queensland RTA where you take your theory test which you must pass before they give you you,r provisional you then take driving lessons. I think thats how it works

Driving

Hi Sandy
Not sure what the situation for newly passed drivers is but for others you just go to a centre and literally swap your licence over there and then after a vision test. No sending anything away to DVLA and waiting weeks for it to come back! They take your photo there and give you your new licence straightaway. All I know is that for new drivers in NSW they have to use P plates for the first 2 years after passing their tests and are subject to certain restrictions, ie can't drive after 11pm with another P plater in the car and also insurance is more expensive up to age 25 not 21 as in UK.

Hi.
In Victoria you can only swap your license if you have had 3 years experience, if not, i'm pretty sure you have to take a test out here.
All newly qualified drivers go on P plates for the first 3 years. This limits the number of passengers you can carry, car engine size and zero alcohol limit.
