l thought you had to sit the theory test bit too so thats excellent news if you can just transfer it. We aim to be in qld too.
Another question to add to this if no one minds, - does anyone know what its like to start learning from scratch in oz and at what age can you start? My son will be 17 in September and would like to have got his uk licence before we depart for oz (hopefully!) in Jan 08 however me thinks thats pushing it a bit given thats hes a dozy sod and the waiting list for a test in our area is massive .

I am new to Oz, I live in Perth, I had to change my license b4 3 months of living here , it was just a transfer. It cost me just over 100 dollers for 5 years. No test, just the normal eyesight test, got my new license within a few days and you dont have to surrender your UK one. In Perth you can start learning to drive at the age of 16! Hope this helps, good luck.
Re the learning to drive question from LynandSean - you can get a learners permit at 16 after a theory test and you can take your 'provisonal' test at 17 with at least 50 hours logged experience behind you. On passing that you can drive unaccompanied (but with speed and other restrictions) for 3 years before getting a full licence. My daughter's just gone from learner' permit to provisonal without too much trouble.
BTW it didn't cost us anything to put her on my wife's RAV4 as a learner and when she got the provisional license (and went on as a named driver) the insurance hardly went up at all. We pay $600 for comprehensive cover which is pretty cheap for a policy with a driver of limited experience and we've in Sydney which is just about the most expensive area.
As long as you hold a full uk driving licence you do not have to take a test here in Oz. Just pop to your local RTA and have a pic taken fill in a form produce your uk licence and pay for a aussie licence ... a 1 or 5 year licence.
Just remember that when you are here driving in Oz that on public holidays and for a couple of days before and after Double demerits apply.
