shipping vehicles

Hi there, Has anyone got any information or adviceabout shipping vehicles to Oz? We are two very keen morotcylists and we are wondering if it is worth the time. trouble, effort and expence of shipping our two much loved motorcycles into Oz (if we get our visas)?

We have looked on sites such as ebay and the choice of bikes seems rather limited compared to the UK - old, high mileage, outdated. So we are seriously considering shipping our two ladies - help???

Also has anyone experience HGV licence replacement? My O/H is being employer sponsored for our visa but he also has a HGV licence here in the UK. Just to edge out bets he wants to transfere this to his Oz licence if/whenwe get there. Does anyone know if/how this works? I know we only have to exchange our UK licences for Oz ones once we get there but is this the same for HGV?

hi
we were looking at taking our car, it does work out quite expensive, you can put your vehicle in the container with your other belongings but your taxed on the vehicle by oz government, not sure if it works the same for bikes as it does for cars but you have to had owed the vehicle for at least a year and the taxes are based on what you payed for it not what its worth now, our car cost us 20 grand two years ago, its not even worth half that today and its a limited edition, cant remember how its worked out but it would cost us about 5 grand to take it, still not sure what we are going to do as some people have recommended that we sell it here and run with the money but others have said take it and sell it in oz as it will worth much more there, its a do we dont we senario and we dont know what to do for the best, i recommend that you get in touch with a removals firm who will work it out for you, hope you get to take you beloved bikes

Cheers for that Kelly, Seems to be a cock-eyed way to assess the worth of your vehicle. One of the bikes cost over £11,000 but 3 years on it is only worth about £5,000, seems rediculous that you are charged at the buying rate.

We will contact a couple of shipping agents and see what they say.

Hi Kelly,

I have given my OH some shipping companies to ring today so if I have any infor I will pass it on. Hope you have also seen the links from SunnyWA. Haven't had time to look at them yet but will follow them up today as well. Trouble is, these government sites confuse you with almost too much information, some of it contradictory as well. Silly but you do become attached to a vehicle. I love my bike because it is the first 'big' bike I have had since passing my test last April. I hav e just been to France on her and she is my friend so to speak. But like you, I may have to find her a good home.

Just checking shipping costs at the moment. Been quoted £3,000 for a 20ft container - bikes hosehold all go in the same one. Will look at import sites tonight and also the bike pages you suggested. Have looked on ebay but nothing there like what we are looking for. At the moment we have a Suzuki 1500 Intruder, a 1300ST Pan European and my little Yamah Virago 535 so we would be looking for a tourer as we like to get about and cover the miles e.g. Honda/BMW of some sort and a cruiser for me (only 4'11" so limied for choice)
