Red face need cheering up!

hi all,
just had a weekend of drinking with friends and family who we will soon be leaving. i think its the alcohol, but i feel sort of down. we leave on 27th june and we intend on settling in the illawarra region. saw a post from 'dirty bird' the other day and they have just arrived there ,jan 2007, and their post wasn't as positive as i might of hoped, basically she said its harder to get work than she thought.
we chose the illawarra cos i lived there in the ninties and i have relatives there. we are both aware of the employment situation in nsw and are not bothered what we do for a job.
i am quite a positive person,(anyone reading my past posts will know my feelings for life in the uk, and my positive approach to our new lives in oz), but i suppose emigrating is a roller coaster ride. my wife is an even more positive person than me and i truely believe if we had to live in the outback in a one horse town she would make a home and get a job + friends etc, she just gets on with anything that life throws at her and i'm lucky to be emigrating with someone who has that attiude.
we have put our notices in and booked the flights so its no going back time and i suppose i'm looking at our life in the uk through rose tinted glasses. we have sold our house so we have no ties there and we have no children so we don't have the extra ties that this brings.
i suppose i'm going throught the what the hell are we doing stage. work wise we probably should re-locate to perth but i lived there as well 91-92 and it didn't have the same feel as the illawarra, so nsw or bust.
if we stayed in the uk we could move up the property ladder but i know in 5-10 years we would think we should have gone to oz.
does anyone else get the comment of people,'have you got a job to got to?', and we haven't, they always say ,' i wouldn't dare', or 'that takes bottle', i don't feel this as i believe that you can find a job anywhere as long as your not fussy.
well another long post by me, i guess being on here is therapeutic,(spelling?), i started the post down and my positive side has surfaced at the end, i think poms in oz will be getting a lot of posts from me when i'm in oz!.

Smile Feeling down

Hi John
We've been in Sydney just over 7 months now and I remember only too well how hard it was the last few weeks in UK having to meet up with family and friends and wondering if you'd ever see them again, etc. I think it's only normal to have wobbly times especially as it gets nearer and becomes more real. Once you've sold your house, handed in your notice, started packing up, etc the impact and enormity of what you are about to do is bound to hit you.
When we came over here my OH didn't have a job to go to but he's a very positive, hard working person and took the view (rather like you expressed) that he would do anything just to earn money and put food on the table and if you are really serious about working you'll find something. We were fortunate in that we could stay with family until we found a place of our own and after a few weeks of job hunting/interviews OH was offered the job he's been doing now for about 5 months and although he's working long hours he really enjoys it.
Basically in your circumstances and with your positive attitudes I think you have nothing to lose but so much to gain and good luck to you both - let us know how you get on.

thanks for that,
i've just had a phone call from a friend i've known for 12 years, we played rugby at the same club, and he knows me inside out. i hadn't seen him for a few weeks , cos of his job, so he has just found out we are flying out to oz soon. he is made up for us and feels its the right thing for us to do and when you get a friend or family member like that it makes you think ,'yes we are doing the right thing', the complete opposite happens when your nearest and dearest give you a negative comment.
your post makes me feel a lot happier to know that everyone goes throught the same feelings.

Hi John

I really must apologise, I didn't mean to worry you about the work situation. The times with family and friends is difficult once you have set a definate date, all my family and friends didn't believe we would do it till we actually stepped on the plane.

I didn't mean to be negative about work, hubby has got a job its just not quite what he wanted but he'll keep trying and stick at the one hes got. I on the other hand have the added responsibility of my job fitting round my kids. I have been offered 2 jobs they were just unsuitable as the hours were quite long.

The Illawarra is still a lovely place to be don't be put off. I was on areal downer the day I found this site. The more positive me is playing at the moment!:)

Good luck

Jane

Only goes to show how normal you are, I think there would be something wrong if you didn't have a wobble now and then

hiya john

we both get asked the question "have you got jobs to go to " and then another question have you got a house? well the utter shock and look of horror on peoples faces is unbelivable. they think we are complete and utter lunatics to be moving to the other side of the world with no job, house, car etc. leaving all the security behind.

well i just say to them. at least we have the bottle to go on this wonderful adventure, to be daring and adventurous and of course take a risk.

yes we might regret moving to oz, who knows. but at least we are giving it a go and living the dream.

so good luck and dont let the B******'s grind you down. they are jealous as they havent got the drive andzeal to live life to the full and live the dream

col & pip

Hiya all,
John D, We were working towards the 27th June as our departure date (havent exchanged contracts on the house yet, but should be in the next couple of weeks!!!) told the guys at work last tuesday what our plans were, they were a bit speechless as i have been telling them for the last year that it was in our 5 year plan(didnt tell them where in the plan) anyway we have got quite a lot to lose if this does'nt go well but you have to be positive and if you are willing to diversify a bit when the going gets tough, and if your partner is right with you in all this then you will be fine (we are thinking of the sunshine coast in queensland, where are you going as we may need some support!!!!!)
JULIE FAIRWAY. Keep us informed of your outcome. Like you we are fed up with the way the UK treats the people that really contribute to the Great part of Britain, and are totally fed up with being kicked in the teeth every time we try to enjoy what the country has to offer. We are just about ready to go, and only have the paperwork to complete.
Looking forward to the challenges ahead and are hoping that even if there is a need for a wayback we are not going to be the ones taking it.

Come onyou Saints.

Chris and Teresa.
