Am i worrying too much

we are thinking moveing to oz possible adelaide but i am concerned that we could be struggling for the rest of our lives. If we sell our house here we will get about £220k
pay of mortgage and be left with about £180k with our savings and me winding up my business we would probably have about £200k to play with . The cost of emigrating flights, visa, shipping ect i guess £15 to 20k??. Buying a new house car furniture ect £150k that would leave us with £50k to survive on. If we dont buy straight away we need to rent a property. My wife needs to find work as she is the main applicant of the visa she is 41 i am 51. She is a leather worker and makes attache cases (she makes the ones used in James Bond films also made things for Prince Charles and Roman Abramoviche) I am a painter and decorator for the last 35yrs. I think it would be hard for my wife in her industry as it is male dominated although she is not worried what she does I have also heard that the largest section of unemployed is the under25s and over 45s it does not look to good for me. We have a son of 18 and a daughter of 15 both coming with us. If it all goes tits up and we dont find work quickly we will be digging into our savings. Can anyone advise on the amount of money we need for a good standard of living.

Ok then, if you're feeling ignored, I'll give my five penny'orth!

IMHO you will be in a very good financial position if you can bring anywhere near that amount. It depends on your expectations too. For example, you could easily use the whole amount buying a house..or a house, boat, two cars etc.

We came with MUCH less than. We have a mortgage - obtained before Paul had actually found employment- and we manage or, just about manage!, on Paul's salary. The average income for Aberfoyle Park was about $37k pa, when I last checked. That obviously means that there are people living on a lot less, as well as many living on more.

I don't think you will have any trouble finding some work. I don't know about your wife, except I would say that quality work will always find a market (again, just my opinion, and what do I really know?), even if you end up living here and sending made-to-order items inter-state.

If it seems that I haven't really answered your question, it's because I can't. At the end of the day, I think it depends on how much you want to be here, what your dreams are, and how long you are prepared to give before you achieve them. Emigrating is huge and I think you'd be very lucky if you didn't lose that sense of financial security you have in the UK. But I think it's worth it...

Hiya people move here with nothing and people move here with hundreds ,,it dosnt make that much difference how much youve got as lazy cow said its what you make of it .In regards to unemployment ,,they are screaming for teenagers to start trade apprentiships etc to help the shortage of hands on staff ,yourself as a painter and decorater should have no problem finding work and if your wife 'will do anything' she too should find employment easy ,have a look at www.alljobs.com.au for an idea of areas requiring people with your skills ,,good luck its a major move and if you didnt worry ,there'd be something wrong !!

I've forwarded you a private message, as was sent to me a while ago.

Everyone should consider these issues very carefully. It would be foolish to move abroacd and not consider how you will manage.

Cheers,

Spock.

I have also had these panic attacks about our financial postion. With wages less but standard of living appearing to be the same as the UK - will we cope? Whilst I appreciate that it is quality of life that counts - surely that has to encorporate money?

Breath in, breath out, breath in, breath out....

Painterman i can relate to how you are thinking,i am your age and my head is spinning right now with "are we doing the right thing" "will we survive" "what if i dont get work" and a whole load of other stuff.Im worried about medicals, location, job for me,schools, how much we can take with us once we sell up etc.
All i can say is alot of people go out there with alot less than you will be taking, yeah they are sometimes younger than us but wtf im not ready to retire and wouldnt want to if i could.
We will be going on my wifes skills and i havent a clue what i will do but i will find something,we will be going to a strange country and although my wife has a job to start it is still very daunting to up sticks and move just like that ,we havent even been to australia we were going on holiday this year to check things out but decided to put the £ 5/6000 to better use when we get there. So we really are going there quite blind,we have a 13 year old boy to worry about as well with schools etc.
The way i see it is, yeah it would be great to be younger and fearless but we are not so we have to use what we have got and that is a little bit more of lifes experiences maybe to look at things here in the uk to see how it was,see how it is,and see how it will be in the future. As for being a painter and decorator i know 2 people who are at the moment training to be what you are already a"painter and decorator",they are 49 year old london cab drivers with 30 odd years driving cabs not painting, simply because your trade is very much wanted out there so youv'e got half a chance mate.
So i would say to you mr painterman just go for it and if it fails you can always come back and there will still be plenty of painting work for you in the uk plus.......high crime rates, high taxes,no quality of life, working your nuts off to survive etc etc etc.

Think about it!!!!

Anyway good luck to you whatever you decide....Jamie
