meeting people

hello
just wondering how easy it is to meet people and make friends in Oz, specifically Sydney?
I don't have kids and probably won't be working, at least initially. I am rellatively out going but need some pointers in the right direction!
Anyone else heading that way soon?

Hi,

I am thinking the same, I am moving to Brisbane but have Two children so will probably meet friends through schooling, in time.

Are you into any sports ect... as I am planning to have some time out from my children when in oz and do swimming maybe try a bit of yoga, this will definetly be a good way to meet people.

Its a worrying feeling knowing your leaving all your good freinds behind and have to start again making good freinds ....but in time your be fine..

Hi Stacy,
I am sure having kids definitely helps when meeting people. I'm not particularly sporty right now but am hoping to become so!! We will see what happens to our good intentions!
I spent 3 months in Hong Kong recently and it was really hard to meet 'Joe Average' so many of the expats living there were living really extravagant lifestyles and we had very little in common. That said I did meet a few people I clicked with but it was tough going.
Those I did meet and enjoyed spending time with were largely through some volunteer work I was doing.
I suppose I am a bit worried as this move is permanent so I feel like I need to make friendships asap to begin enjoying life.
Good luck with your move

Hi twinkle

I guess one of the ways to go for you would be to join clubs i.e. gym or any other clubs in which you have an interest. It is hard to make new friends at any stage in life if you have kids or not, (personally when my kids where younger i was not a coffee & cake chat mum and hated those mothers meetings even though i went so my kids could mix as this was at pre school age) perhaps another idea would be to do some voluntry work.
Wish you good luck & hope you make many new friends
