We have just had Allied Pickfords around to quote us for our 20ft container and I found out a few things that I thought might be useful (apologies to those that already know this!!)
a. If you buy any new goods (ie washing machine etc) you will be liable to pay 'duty' on these and they need to be declared on your customs form! (They didn't say how much the duty was)
b. If you don't mind your 20ft container being put inside a 40ft container along with someone else's you could save appx £500
c. I can't take my 10 cases of flavoured vodka that I have ordered over the internet as it's no alcohol (only joking )
I have got exact figures as yet but thought the above might be useful if any of you were unaware

Its on any thing that is less than 12 mths old, we have a couple of items that are, so I have copied the receipts and given them to our move manager to put with the customs paperwork, also anything wooden has to be listed from kitchen utensils to pictures to ornaments if they have wood content.
All items have to be clear of dirt, most boxes will be inspected by customs and if they find anything they let you know and you have the option of paying to be cleaned or paying to be destroyed.....

Yes another good tip is to steam clean any garden tools that you are taking, bike tyres and also the souls of your shoes! You may laugh, but I know someone who got fined for bringing soil over on those items, so we steam cleaned all ours, and we are so glad that we did as they took a dislike to our container. List everything that is made of wood, I even put down my wooden spoons!
We found when unpacking that an alligators head (er, dried!), some seeds, footy boots etc, had been packed and not declared to customs. Our packers just packed everything including two of our suitcases, which meant we rolled up to the airport in a limo, clutching black bin bags!
It goes to show though... not that I'd EVER recommend breaking the very sensible, stringent import laws.
We bought a few 'new items' cutlery, crockery etc., took it out of it's box and repacked it. Like Cal says whose to know if it's older than 12 months? Our Sofa's were only months old

We will be taking some new bedroom furniture too and a man I spoke to said to put it all together when it comes then take it apart again and package it back up and it would be ok.
Keep the hubby busy if nothing else!

we are also making sure that receipts we have for the new stuff is on our person and not on the container or the air freight, as we do have quite a bit of stuff, I blame price drop tv.
