Smile asthma!!

hi everyone,

my husband suffers with asthma, i shouldn't say suffer really because he is not as bad as some people. do many people have asthma in australia especially in the brisbane area and how easy is it to get inhalers?? when we are in england he has to use his inhalers quite regularly, but when we have been on holidays to spain, france and america he doesn't need to use them!! also, will they use it against us when it comes to do the medicals??

thanks for any info
shellie

Hi Shellie

I posted a similar question about my 7 year old daughter and was told that you can buy the inhalers over the counter over there. When we were over there in October, my daughter didn't have to use her inhaler once. As soon as we landed at Manchester, as we left the terminal she had to use her blue inhaler.

regarding the other question about will it be used against you, I don't know the answer to that but hopefully somebody else will answer that for you.

Good luck - Joanne

Thumbs down inhalers

i use a blue inhaler, i too do not need to puff on it hardly ever when i go abroad, usually because we stay by the sea and there is less pollution i guess and pollen etc if you have allergies. see yet another reason to move to the other side of the world! when we travelled i went armed with inhalers just incase i couldnt get hold of one (which of course took up precious room in the rucksack!) and came back with them all!!

dont know for sure, but i very much doubt it will go against you, i totally forgot to mention it on my medical form, so unless its really serious i wouldnt say anything.

I know this might be a dumb question so I apologise in advance.

I always assumed that they have access to your medical records. Is this not the case?

records

well its a good question and i am not too sure, as i imagine they do have access, however the panal doctor that we went to was an aussie and seemed really knowledgable ( as you would imagine him to be!!!) and there were a few questions that i left unanswered to ask his advice on, and he told me not to mention a few things, i guess bacause it was irrelevent to our visa andhe knew it wouldnt jeopadise anything, bascially i think i was trying to be a bit too honest only because i thought oz immi would see my gp records and think i was being devious!!!!! this prob hasnt helped you in anyway!!!!!!

We have friends (surprise surprise!) who have asthma. We're in Adelaide and both have found that their asthma is a little worse. The almost year-round pollen and heat affects them, but I guess it depends what your triggers are. On the plus side, they have no problem obtaining inhalers.

The fact that both mother and daughter suffer with pretty severe asthma made no difference to obtaining their visa, and really, unless you need to be hospitalised on a regular basis, why should it?

I'm sure you'll be fine.

One of the questions on the medical form was do you/or have you ever sufferred from indegestion!! medications are easily prescribed here they may have a different brand name but will be the same thing, just make sure you know the name e.g. the blue inhaler is Salbutamol but known as ventolin in the UK, bring one with you (even if it's empty) as it will have both names on it.

8788jt sent me this earlier today. Blue inhalers are $8 over the counter.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Spock, I have just cut and pasted this from a previous thread that Dave53 answered. Hope this is what you needed.............

Ventolin inhalers can be bought over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription ,they cost about $8 I think . All other asthma medication especially the steroids have to be a prescription item . Prescription items cost a max of about $27 , although some items are not covered by the government pharmacy benefit system , so the consumer is up for the full cost , however , the vast majority are .
Hope this helps .

Hi Shellie,
My OH has asthma too, (he takes Ventolin and Becotide) and it seems to clear completely when we are in Oz. Last time we were over in Oz it was for 10months and he took a years supply from home with him! Lots of good advice though from everyone about getting inhalers in oz..thanks.
OH's relatives live in Brisbane and we are thinking of moving to the sunshine coast. Where abouts in Brisbane are you moving to?
Rachel
