My other half has just accepted a job in Sydney and we are due over in 3 months - ahhhh, very excited but also very nervous...just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone who has answered almost all my questions with their posts on this site, it's been really helpful.
Just a silly question but one that I would appreciate any help on - we've a very excitable 15 month old boy - any hints on entertaining on the plane? Will he have to sleep in my arms or is there an alternative? Can he go with the cargo ?!
Although this is a big worry, most people find that the children aren't as bad as they anticipated. You can book a cot type thing for babies, but I don't think they're suitable for 15 months.
Book a night flight, you're son will then be naturally tired and will probably sleep, I know emirates and Singapore give out cuddly toys, take a couple of books a small pack of crayons and plain paper if he likes scribbling.
Thinking of when my son was 15 months old, he'd probably have enjoyed demolishing the headphones!!

hiya when you book your flights, make sure you tell them you want the bulk head seats as you have a little one that needs a sky travel cot, you may be lucky when we went in August we had a spare seat so fingers crossed for you
Hi,
I know this may not be suitable for all children of all ages, but I recently had a conversation with a local pharmacist about long flights with children ( for travel sickness mainly), and he said that many people give their children PHENERGON as it has a sedative in it which is known to help children sleep on long flights and can get them adjusted to the time difference a lot quicker, I have discussed this with a friend who has rellies in Melbourne and they use it a lot over there too.
It may not be what you are looking for, and I dont know how old babies need to be before they can have it, but it might help somebody out there.

We're flying next week with a 3 year old and 6 month old baby. I just looked up Phenergan and found that it's not recommended for under 2s. See this websitehttp: //www.dooyoo.co.uk/health-therapies-treatments/phenergan/94733/
Someone recommended using Medised which is a cold remedy for babies and kids as it has an antihistamine in it like Phenergan which helps to knock them out.
Hi Gail,
Medised is good but it can have the opposite effect on kids and make them hyper, so if this is what you were thinking of trying it have a trial first coz all you need is kids that dont want to sit down on a 24 hour flight (great fun!!!), also because it has paracetamol in it you are limited to what you can give them,
Thanks anyway

Having done a couple of flights with a child around that age a few things that have worked for us in the past, taking a beach ball to play with in the departure lounge, it doesn't hurt anyone if it hits them! Walk, Walk and walk some more whilst waiting for your flight. Don't take the priority boarding, it just means you have to keep your little one sat down for an extra 45 min whilst everyone else is boarding. Get yourself organised with everything you will need for take off before you get on the plane that way you can be one of the last to board without annoying other passengers holding up the plane trying to find 'ted'. Don't take noisy toys even if it is their favourite. We made sure we took plenty of drinks and snacks. We also took things like battery operated toothbrushes, you can get them in the shape of cars etc, they love switching them on an off. Finally, I know we all hate that filthy favourite toy/blanket .... don't wash it for a few days before you go. The familiar smell (YAK!) helps to settle them.
These things are never as bad as you expect and your little one will probably be a treasure. Relax and don't get too wound up if they cry there is little you can do and getting stressed normally makes them worse.
sorry to ramble, I know what it's like. I am trying not to think too mucha bout travelling with a VERY active 4yr old an 18mth .
