jobs in adelaide

hiya!

We want to move to adelaide, my concerns are finding a full time job, as I need to have a full time job for at least 12months for my visa. Im a leather worker, which is a little unusual I know. I make attache cases, and in the past have made games like backgammon, scabble ect.
We bought somes books on oz at the weekend, and they have not painted a pretty picture on employment. Im 41 now and know if we dont get on with it will will never get there, just concerned about work. My husband is 51 and a painter and decorator, and has been self employed for over 20 years. He is also worried that he will not find work, employed or working for himself again. Can anybody give us any information.

Thanks...:)

Hi Carol

Your own skill appears to be here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupati...er-4944-11.htm

Hubby's seems to be this one:

http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupati...or-4421-11.htm

or this:

http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupati...or-4421-01.htm

For the rest, you really need to start here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/immigration.htm

The easiest way to get started is probably to talk to several Migration Agents. If you feel up to a serious amount of head-banging, it is possible to manage without an Agent, but it very much depends on personal choice.

Read through the Immi site and do not ignore the booklets and information forms, They are very helpful, ven though it takes a lot of initial head-banging to get the gist of what the whole thing is about.

As far as finding work in Adelaide is convered, I suggest you try asking around on AdelaideBrits as well as on here. South Australia is desperate for skilled migrants, I believe, but the people on AdelaideBritis are very helpful indeed and could tell you much more. The link is here:

Cheers

Gill

Carol,
There would be an outlet for your skills in Adelaide, I'm sure - it's a sophisticated and increasingly prosperous city.

If looking for employment, you could contact the well-known small upmarket bag shop in the northwest corner of the CBD, Leigh Street Luggage (they have a website, and you can search under the name for it easily enough). Or, if you make and market your own stuff, there are a number of regular markets around the city and in various suburbs at which artisan producers and craftspeople sell their products. Adelaide City Council, for example, runs a weekend market (I believe it's changing around now from Sat to Sun) on Rundle Street in what is generallyknown as the 'trendy east end precinct' (ie it attracts a lot of tourists staying in the city), which when I looked a few weeks ago had stalls selling olive oil, winebottle cheeseboards, wooden kitchenware, bonsai plants, homespun garments, jewellery, artworks, amongst others...leather goods would fit right into that particular setting. Good luck.

Pig's ar$e it is!

I always thought that leather workers had something to do with the sex trade. No offence.

Sorry Carol, I'm a weak woman and couldn't resist!

South Australia is awesome. IMHO there are two issues with migrating. The first is getting the visa, the second is finding work.

People get their visas on whatever grounds they can. Even if your visa is dependant on being in full-time employment for a year, I'm sure it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you fulfill that requirement.

When we came over, my husband said that he would take whatever work he could, just so that we could survive. As it happens, he was very fortunate and found good work within 10 days of arrival. I think that it's the same as anywhere. If you are after a particular or specialist job, then you might have to wait. If you are prepared to take anything, and perhaps able to subsidise any shortfall in wage, you'll do just fine.

There's a lot of building work over here too, so I'm sure your husband would be able to find work. I don't know if you have to have any particular certificates though - SA (don't know about anywhere else) likes certificates and licences for everything - coffee barista inc.!

Good luck!
LC
