Question Canberra Schools????????????

Hi

We are 'hoping' to move to Canberra at the beginning of September this year - Hubby has job with Aussie Navy and we're just waiting for the Visa Application to be sorted. Current status is that we have had it all acknowledged - Meds and Pcc's all done and there - just waiting for CO on 47ES Visa (Labour Agreement).

My question is Hubby will be working in Campbell Park Area of Canberra - SCHOOLS???

My kids are - or will be - 11,15 & 16 and we want to get them into Schools ASAP - preferably at the beginning of October to keep some form of normality in their lives.

Can Anyone recommend best/good private/catholic/state schools in and around Canberra??

I have a full list of Schools for the area, but have no clue where to start!

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks in advance

Angie

we moved across from the rn too. the best thing we did was use hubbys resettlement job seeking allowance to come over and reccy schools and housing for our selves 6 months b4 our move,.even though we were comitted to coming it made planning the move and what to bring much easier and we reckon saved us money in the long run as we brought things we were originally going to leave behind. we looked at all the school options private and state and ended up choosing a catholic high school( if youre not catholic dont worry just convince them your into religion!)for the older boys (12 & 13)and a state primary for the yougest(8). we then knew which suburbs to request defence housing to place us.state schhools allocate places according to geographic area.our friends were on exchange in canberra and loved it. theyd recommend canberra grammar if youre up for the fees! no bs allowance here except in exceptional circumstances.get the kids into local clubs when you arrive depending on their interests. having a common interest with aussie kids is a better ice breaker than just going to school with them. the defence families organisations here are really good and helpful. good luck with the move

Hiya!

Thanks sooo much for this - Hubbie did a reccie in November last year, but we were unaware of Canberra being an option at that stage - he did open a Bank Account and chatted to the REDLO etc. We have 'chosen' Daramalan for all 3 kids - Abbie will need a primary School for first couple of months as she's not due to start until 08 in YR 7.

I have completed the enrolment forms and have contaqcted their current Schools to get in contact via email for reports etc. Fingers Crossed - we are looking at North Canberra - but no posting order as yet means no DHA log-in for viewing properties. We have a dog too, so hopefully that's not going to be a problem!??#

Loads to ask you.....apologies in advance

When did you get there? What does Hubbie do?? RN & RAN? Differences for him with work??

And you??.....have you found work? Differences in OZ against expectations?? Smooth move??

Our kids are into sports and outdorr 'everything' so I think they'll settle ok

Sorry to bombard you with so much, but any info will be apreciated!

Thanks again

Angie

if you ask defence community organisation family liaison officer for canberra they may be able to put you in touch with another family who have also made "the move'. or if you like we can chat "off forum'. im sure your head is buzzing with all the things to plan & bouncing things off someone whos already experienced it can help.
