To koala12,
hat happened to your Dad is symbolic of a lot of procedures within many areas of the NHS. Policies and protocols exist for just about everything you can imagine, and unless you have a certificate to state that you are competent, regardless of how much experience you have, forget it. Eg. all midwives in my area were stopped from weighing babies until they were in receipt of a competency certificate, even though we had all been using them for years. The nurse your dad saw was probably more than capable of sorting his ears out but the bureaucrat who get paid $$$$$$$$$$$ make it very difficult.

It's on the news today (again!) that Maternity Services are overstretched and women are being left alone for hours during labour. This is my exact point and for many it is there but for the grace of god that they get through with a positive outcome. I have had enough, I have friends who have gone to Oz and are practising midwives down there and they say it is a different world and they are able to practice in the way they dreamed of when they were student, with one to one care being the norm and not the exception as it is in the UK.

Just getting stuff together for the TRA. I go to work each day praying that it is not the day that my worst fears are realised.
Here's to all those who aspire to living in Oz.

Hi there, missed this post earlier, sorry! Thanks. Just want to say I love your bit about wanting to be the women who was "glad she did it" instead of "wish she had". I'm the same, I dont want to have any regrets when I hit 50 to turn around and say what have I done with my life. My husband leaves for Brisbane 2 weeks on Saturday and I am so jealous I've got to stay and sell the house

Hi everyone, talking about the NHS ,i have worked as a nurse for over 13yrs and like alot of nurses feel very frustrated, devalued etc, etc, and have seen the service going down hill at a very rapid pace, the hospital i work in used to be a friendly enjoyable place to work, i did a shift last night and we were stretched to the limit, short staffed no breaks, and i got pulled into the office because i had time off work with a chest infection and couldnt look after myself let alone a criticaly ill patient, next time i will crawl in, i feel that as a so called caring profession,we dont care about the staff at all anymore, ,and now i dread going into work, dont get me wrong i love my job its the politics that is getting everyone down and they seem to be leaving in droves. Sorry rant over
Cant wait to move to Aus.

Hear hear Becky!!

Becky, I know exactly what you mean. Every day you go to work is more depressing than the last. You are absolutely right when you say that the so-called caring profession does not care for it's staff. I have done with dragging myself in when I feel like death warmed up as you are not appreciated for it anyway. All "they" are interested in is numbers, not people as individuals. It is time to take care of ourselves. Good luck and hope you find a better quality of life and work in Australia.

Hi there

I've become addicted to this forum, everyone is so nice and helpful, thanks for that. My husband is going to be based in Geebung with his work so we are looking at the Inner North suburbs. I am obsessed with trying to find a house! I am constantly on Real Estate Au looking, but I will just have to trust him to find a rental

No doubt I'll be asking you some more questions soon!:)
