Question Rent furnished or unfurnished?

Hi everyone,

We are hoping to move to Queensland June 08 and will be renting for the first two years. I jut wondered whether the rental properties are mainly furnished or unfurnished?

I need to know whether to sell the contents of my house or not! I have read some posts about the electrical equipment etc, but just wondered about our leather settees/table & chairs etc etc.

All advise welcomed

Thanks

Hev

Hi,

This is only my experience... we weren't in a position to send our our furniture months in advance, so it left only a few days before we did. We filled a 20 ft container with practically all our stuff, beds, 2 leather sofas, dining table, pictures, pots and pans etc. The cost to Perth was £3,800 (including insurance), it would cost far more than that to buy everything new here, the houses too are also a little larger so despite all this stuff, we're still going to have to buy an extra bed, sofa and fridge. We were lucky that we found a 3 month furnished rental, which gave us enough time to look around where we want to settle.

Hi Ali

Just wondering....how long does it take for a container of house stuff to reach Australia from UK? We are like Brown Family, will be moving into rented to begin with, but might be possible to send container in advance, depending on how long this takes.

Thanks in advance, by the way we too will be in Perth for our hols in just over a week's time!! So excited

Cheers,
Rachel

Ali,

Thanks for the info. Did the container company pack for you or did you do it yourself for that price?

Rach, I have read some listings that the containers take about 6 weeks to arrive. The thing is we would love to send them appx 4 weeks before we go, but wouldn't be able to give them an address in oz until we get out there!? I keep changing my mind about whether to take the furniture or not as I am not sure whether most rental houses are furnished or not............oh well a bit of time yet to have a think :-)

Hello Hev,

Mmm....was kinda hoping that could send container on ahead, then leave it at the container depot (or whatever it's called) until we're ready to take delivery of it? Will that not be possible??

Perhaps Ali might know......help

Cheers,
Rachel

Hiya you are best to try and get somthing furnished for a little while ,,furnished rental is like rocking horse poo and unfurnished rentals are becoming harder to get as more and more people move here ,were in Queensland are you hoping to rent ??? some areas do have better availability but according to the news and papers its a hard job nowadays, dont be put off you will get somewere but it may be better to book at b&b or motel for a little while ,

Rach,

We are in the same boat as u, would be good to send container beforehand (don't even mind paying rental at the container storage dept) if it is possible.

Ali or anyone else..........do you happen to know whether this is possible please?

Thanks

Hev

Rach,

Thanks for info. Am off to emigration fair on Sunday so hope to get a lot more info then. Let me know if there is anything specific u r after.

Cal,

Thanks for info, am errring towards taking furniture now, seems sensible thing to do bearing in mind the lack of unfurnished properties.

Hiya

We used John Mason (liverpool based), they were excellent at UK end (can't comment this end as stuff not arrived), we were quoted as the shipment taking 10 - 12 weeks. You can pay for storage at oz end (but off hand can't remember what that costs). The guys did all the packing, they worked solidly for 2 days - to be honest I wondered how it would all fit onto the container, which they deliver to your house, they load it then take it to Southampton. Personally, I'll be glad to have some familiar things around me but also have the excitment of shopping for some new furniture. We just thought it was more economical to bring stuff than buy everything new - we've even brought some garden furniture - it will also give us time to shop around rather than impulse buying because we really need something. - I'm rambling now !!
