Electrician off to cairns ahhhhhh!

Hi there,
iv just joined this site and looking for any advice off fellow tradesmen off to live in oz.
Im due to go in june with my partner katy who has been given sponsership as a nurse to cairns hospital.
I currently work as a maintenance electrician. Iv just sent off for a ARTC application pack to get my qualifications sorted out.
All i would really like is any advice any tradesmen can give that are in the process of moving or have moved.
Hope to here from you.
Many thanks
Stu :D

Hi there
I understand that there are some sort of examinations to take which bring us upto date with aussie regulations, but i dont think that the standard of the Australian electrical qualifications are as high as ours.
(i apologise to any aussie sparks reading this, its not a put down in any way, its just that i cant scratch my arse without having the right qualification or permit)
Presuming your up to date with the 16th Edition Regulations (not saying your old or anything ) you should be fine.
I know a few lads that have worked as sparkys in oz, and they found the wiring was very similar to our own. The spiders and snakes could make things interesting though

Realy dont think theres anything to worry about.
Hope this helps

Hi again, dont know if youve had a look but there is another forum iv just started looking on called british expats.com and there is a whole section on electricians moving to oz or moved. Makes for very good reading. Not as simple as you may think to get in! Are you in the process of moving there? Yes iv got me 16th edition, city and guilds nvq level 3 in electrical engineering and finaly inspection and testing but i dont think that means a thing to them?

Hi there
will have to give it a look. When you say not that easy to get in, do you mean not that easy to get a visa?
I applied for a 136 Skilled - Independent visa which i have now got.
My skills were assessed as an ELECTRICIAN - GENERAL, which was on the demand list.
Im presuming you are applying for the same

No im going with my girlfriend who has been given sponsorship. We plan to apply for residency once there.
Its the whole thing of getting your licence to work that is the nightmare. You cant just get over there and work. You may have to do a college course and a couple of tests, can take up to 6 months before you can work unsupervised.
Have a look on that other site i mentioned. There is a lot of good reading!

If you go onto the site, look along toolbar at top, click on search, type electrician.
It will come up with various threads people have posted, if you look at the right hand side of the page you will see different catagories people have posted under. If you see one with electrician on it, click on the electrician bit and it will take you to the electricians bit. There is everything you need to know.
Looks like NSW is the hardest state to pass the tests in from what i have read. Glad im at least going to Queensland!

Im non the wiser for reading that lot
Would be nice to know what procedure we need to take when we get there, if anybody knows.
Keep your eyes and ears open, and let me know if you get any info.

Ps. i still dont think theres anything to worry about, the thought of more exams gets to the best of us.... Bet there were plenty of confused looking sparkys when you sat the 2391 :? :? :? :?
