rudi, now i am confused, as going by helens scale the twins are 15 turning 16 this summer so i thought they would go into yr 10 now and start yr11 in jan. Cut off date is June, but you said helen was a year out with ages, so i still think they are in yr 10 now x God we have confused and frazzled your brain!!! I know the real answer is to discuss with the school they will attend when we enrol them x

In Australia, it's far more common for kids to be held back a year, particularly before they start school. I think if there's any doubt at all between two years, you should put your children in the younger of the years. There will be plenty of children their own age in that year whose parents held them back, anyway, so they won't feel out of place.

Moving to a new country is really confusing - putting them in a younger grade gives them time to settle in before having to face up to the big end of year 12 thing. The curriculum here is quite different too, so it would give them a chance to catch up if there are any areas where the UK lags behind. (I brought a 13 year old to Victoria from the UK and he was waaaaay behind the rest of his Australian class in maths, for instance.)

And if your kids don't know what they want to do next - this gives them time to decide.

No, the cut off date for you is the end of December - it changed I think for kids born in 2000 ish onwards to the end of June. Kids born before that date, the cut off date remains the end of the year.

Helen's scale is incorrect.

This year, 2010, your twins should be in grade 11.

SO.....

this is the year kids would be in right now if they were in Queensland.

born 1993 - grade 12
born 1994 - grade 11
born 1995 - grade 10
born 1996 - grade 9
born 1997 - grade 8
born 1998 - grade 7
born 1999 - grade 6

beyond that, it becomes complicated, because they staggered the cut off date change a bit - see the Faith Lutheran table.

Love

Rudi

Is the OP looking at Qld? I thought she mentioned SA. Qld is out of step with the rest of Australia.

My son's year 10 class (Victoria) has a range of birthdays. Most were born from May 1994-April 1995, but there are a few who are older than that.
