Languages in Schools
Hi
Can anyone tell me what languages the kids learn in secondary schools? Does it differ from state to state? Also, do any primary/junior schools ever learn a second language?
Thanks

It differs from school to school!!!! They are all supposed to have a LOTE (Language Other Than English) in their curriculum from K upwards and it can be anything from sign language through to Cherokee if they can find teachers to teach it. Most schools go with an Asian language - Japanese, Indonesian and Mandarin are very common. The European languages less so although you can sometimes find them teaching French, Spanish and to a lesser extent German. Not a really academic curriculum though for the most part, just a few words and an appreciation of the relevant cuisine - not usually the passage translations and grammar structures of our childhood, more the living language approach which is far more entertaining for kids!

My children go to school in Leeming WA - in Primary my son is learning Japanese, at high school my daughter had a choice of Japanese or French. Schools vary in the languages they offer

Our friends boy was learning Indonesian. He was showing Brad. I wonder if our kids are expected to learn this language as they would be so far behind?

Melbourne does the standard French and/or Japanese, with one bilingual primary school (Camberwell - French), as well as Italian and Greek, due to the large communities. Mandarin and Indonesian are common in High School. German and Russian, less so.

Hi, we have whats called long distance learning at schools here in Western Australia, the same thing happens within all the other states (only I cant find them at the mo lol..soz, just google 'ldistance learning"school+state/territory and it should come up). This means that should you not find a language or course available, you enrol your children into SIDE www.side.wa.edu.au
the kids actually use an online group msn type thing whereby they communicate with the teacher, who is based in the city. My daughter has taken French and German this way. It is as a normal lesson where they are in a classroom environment.
This happens all over regional areas in Aus, although you might be able to ask the school whether iits availability in the city if they dont provide a lesson your child might need. x

My kids learn Japanese at primary school. They did learn Italian but the Italian teacher left and they had difficulty finding another one. Many Catholic schools will offer Italian and an Asian language in secondary school.
The school that my daugther is going to which is a grammar school is offering Japanese, French and German.
Mandarin has become more popular lately and many schools would offer a European language also.
